Air quality in Utah Quality of air in Utah

Air quality in Utah is often some of the worst in the United States. While poor air quality in Utah is concentrated due to the mountainous topography which can cause pollutants to build up near the surface the source of harmful pollutants is primarily industrial combined with the prevalence of emissions from gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles, especially commercial trucks, which are not regulated like passenger vehicles. Burning wood fuel for home heating can also contribute significantly to poor air quality. Homes heated with wood contribute about 3000 times the amount of pollution as homes heated with natural gas. Possibly up to 50% of air pollution in Salt Lake County is from vehicles, though most of that is industrial and commercial pollution, not private passenger cars. That number is although often quoted, refers to a specific type of pollution, and not harmful particulates that comprise the majority of the problematic substances.
