The Polish Institutes is a network of establishments reporting to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Poland. As of 2020 there are 25 of them. Their mission is described as "creating a positive image of Poland abroad" by promoting Polish culture, history, science, language and national heritage. [1] Other tasks include supporting cultural exchange, in particular, within the framework of the European Union National Institutes for Culture, as well as implementation of various international cultural programmes. [1]

Contents

Polish institutes cooperate with local institutions and NGOs in organizing various events. [1]

The names may slightly differ in some countries. For example, in London and New York, the institute is called "Polish Cultural Institute".

Polish culture in the interwar period witnessed the rebirth of Polish sovereignty. The nationhood along with its cultural heritage was no longer suppressed by the three foreign partitioners. The cultural development saw the retreat of the 19th century elite cultures of nobility as well as the traditional folk culture, and the rise of a new mass culture integrating Polish society closer to the new intelligentsia educated in the practice of democracy.

The looting of Polish cultural artifacts and industrial infrastructure during World War II was carried out by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union simultaneously after the invasion of Poland of 1939. A significant portion of Poland's cultural heritage, estimated at about half a million art objects, was plundered by the occupying powers. Catalogued pieces are still occasionally recovered elsewhere in the world and returned to Poland.
