The PolyU Faculty of Construction and Environment is one of the faculty at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. [2] [3] The faculty consists of the Department of Building and Real Estate, Department of Building Services Engineering, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics. In 2021, the faculty has around 115 full-time academic staff. [4]

Overview

The history of the Faculty can be date back to 1937. Today's Department of Building and Real Estate within the Faculty is established in 1937 as the Building Department of Government Trade School, Hong Kong. [5] :3 The Faculty has a long history of offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the fields of building engineering, civil engineering, fire engineering, occupational safety and health, structural engineering and surveying. [6]

The Faculty also offers professional training on Surveying and Geo-Information Technology to different government agencies, including Macau Cartography and Cadastre Bureau. [7]

Research

The Faculty involves in research of combining smart city technology to optimise trip planning. [8] Moreover, the Faculty's Ng Wing Hong Laboratory for Sustainable City contributes in research of high-level information technology infrastructure for examining the sustainable development of Hong Kong at the building and city level. [9] [10]

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) is one of the schools at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). It was established in 1979 as the Department of Institutional Management and Catering Studies, then renamed as Department of Hotel and Tourism Management in 1992. Qingyan (Yan) Chen (陳清焰) is the Director of the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR) and Chair Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, active in the field of building science. He is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in the United States. He is the editor-in-chief of the academic journal Building and Environment.

Deric Daniel Waters or Dan Waters was a British educator, scholar of building science and heritage conservationist. He was the founding principal of the Morrison Hill Technical Institute in Hong Kong from 1969 to 1972, Assistant Director, Education Department of Hong Kong from 1974 to 1980. Waters retired in 1980 and obtained his MPhil from Loughborough University in 1982 and PhD in 1985. He was a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Directors, Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building, Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and an Associate Member of the British Institute of Management.
