Powhatan County Public Schools is the public school system of Powhatan County, Virginia, United States. As of 2019, there are about 4,300 students enrolled in 5 accredited schools. [2] The district is led by superintendent Dr. Beth Teigen. [3]

High Schools (9-12)

The facility was completed in 2003. [4]

Middle Schools (6-8)

Formerly Powhatan Junior High School, the building was torn down and rebuilt in 2018 to be Powhatan Middle School. The facility is 48,000 Sq. Ft, and 2 stories. [5]

Elementary Schools (PreK-5)

The facility was completed in 1987. [6]

Other facilities

Pocahontas Landmark Center, previously known as Pocahontas Middle School was renovated in 2019 to house the district's administration staff, and school board meeting room. [9]

Powhatan Transportation Facility, is a 16,000 Sq. Ft. facility that houses the school district's dispatching department, and 3 maintenances garages for district busses and vehicles. The facility also has built in fuel pumps and a 2.5 acre parking lot for dispatch staff and busses. [10] [11]

Controversies

In 2019, a Flat Rock Elementary School employee was accused by parents of assaulting children when grabbing them because of food being thrown in the cafeteria. According to the Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney, witness statements were inconsistent and there was not enough concrete evidence to make a case. No charges were filed against the employee, and they have returned to work. [12]

On June 30, 2022, Andrew Clinton Snead, the District's Performing Arts Coordinator was arrested on two counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor. [13] Snead was placed on unpaid administrative leave. In September, six more charges were placed on Snead, with a total of eight charges spanning back over 10 years. Including eight felonies, seven counts of taking indecent liberties with a child by a person in a custodial or supervisory relationship, and one of solicitation of child pornography. [14]

On June 29, 2023, Andrew Snead pleaded guilty to seven counts of indecent liberties with a child while in a custodial role, and one count of solicitation of a pornographic image of a child. Snead was sentenced to 30 years with 22 years suspended. When he is released he will be placed on the Virginia Sex Offender Registry, and will be on supervised probation. [15]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Anglo-Powhatan Wars</span> 17th-century conflicts between Virginia colonists and Algonquian Indians

The Anglo–Powhatan Wars were three wars fought between settlers of the Colony of Virginia and the Powhatan People of Tsenacommacah in the early 17th century. The first war started in 1609 and ended in a peace settlement in 1614. The second war lasted from 1622 to 1632. The third war lasted from 1644 until 1646 and ended when Opechancanough was captured and killed. That war resulted in a defined boundary between the Indians and colonial lands that could only be crossed for official business with a special pass. This situation lasted until 1677 and the Treaty of Middle Plantation which established Indian reservations following Bacon's Rebellion.
