Presbyterian Church in India (Reformed) is a presbyterian denomination, established in Manipur in 1984, formed by a group of churches that broke away from the Evangelical Convention Church. [4] [5] [6] [7] [3]

History

On 1908, the Dr. and Mrs. Peter Frazer and Watkin Roberts, sent by the Presbyterian Church of Wales, arrived in India. On 1908, they arrived in Aizawl, Mizoram. They were joined by other missionaries like Rev. and Mrs. David Evan Jones and Rev. and Mrs. Robert Evans. Rev. Dr. Frazer. [4]

From this missionary work the Evangelical Convention Church was organized. [3]

In the 1970s, one of the pastors of this denomination, the Rev. Vung D. Tombing, attended Covenant Theological Seminary at Presbyterian Church in America. [4]

After returning to India in 1977, this pastor had a great influence on the Evangelical Convention Church.

However, the denomination took a stand against Calvinism in 1984. [4] [5] [6] [7]

In the same year, a group of adherent members of the Reformed doctrines withdrew and formed the Presbyterian Church in India (Reformed). [4] [5] [6] [7]

From its growth, the appellation spread to several cities. In 2018 it had about 50 churches and congregations and 10,000 members. [4]

Doctrine

The IPIR adopts the Apostles' Creed, Westminster Confession of Faith, Westminster Shorter Catechism and Westminster Larger Catechism as its official doctrine. The denomination opposes women's ordination. [4]

Inter-church relations

The denomination is a member of the World Reformed Fellowship [1] and the Reformed and Presbyterian Fellowship of India. [2]

Covenant Theological Seminary Seminary of the Presbyterian Church in America

Covenant Theological Seminary, sometimes known as Covenant Seminary, is the denominational seminary of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and it is located in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Covenant trains leaders for work in the church and the world — especially as pastors, missionaries, and counselors. It does not require all students to be members of the PCA, but it is bound to promote the teachings of its denomination. Faculty must subscribe to the system of biblical doctrine outlined in the Westminster Standards.

The Reformed Presbyterian Church in North East India was established in 1835 by American missionaries like Rev. James R. Campbell. He started work in Saharanpur. Later Rev. Watkins R. Robert came to Mizoram in 1907. It was officially organised in 1979 with seven households, the first denomination of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in North East India. It had 4,200 members and 50 congregations in 2004. It now has 14,038 members and more than 107 congregations in North East India in Manipur, Assam, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya. There's a growing church planting ministry in Myanmar.
