Columbus Day is a national holiday in many countries of the Americas and elsewhere, and a federal holiday in the United States, which officially celebrates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas. Columbus went ashore at Guanahaní, an island in the Bahamas, on October 12, 1492. Elda Aída Pértile is an Argentine politician. Pértile has been active in politics since the 1980s; as a member of the local Acción Chaqueña party, she was elected intendenta (mayor) of Resistencia, Chaco in 1991, serving until 1995. She was also a member of the Resistencia City Council, and served in the Chamber of Deputies of Chaco during two consecutive terms from 2009 to 2017. From 2017 to 2021, she served as a National Deputy.
