Push the Blues Away is a collaborative studio album by Australian blues musicians Josh Teskey and Ash Grunwald, released on 13 November 2020 through Ivy League Records.

The album was recorded to analogue tape and features a mix of original songs by both artists, alongside two covers. [3]

Background and release

The album was inspired by both artists' love of blues and mutual admiration for each other's work. The project commenced after the duo began an impromptu jam of "The Sky Is Crying" during downtime between takes filming a video clip for Grunwald's "Ain't My Problem"; a track which featured the Teskey Brothers. [4] Grunwald said "Somebody filmed our little jam, and it became the seed of a great idea: Why don't we do an acoustic blues album? No bells and whistles, something from the heart. This album was made how any good blues album should be in my opinion; Spontaneously and instinctively." [5]

The album was recorded in five days at The Teskey Brothers' studio in Warrandyte. [4]

The eight-track album features a handful of songs written by Teskey and Grunwald respectively, along with two covers – Son House's "Preachin' Blues" and the aforementioned "The Sky Is Crying". [5]

Singles

On 23 August 2020, Teskey and Grunwald premiered the song "Thinking 'Bout Myself" on ABC's The Sound . [6] [5] The song was digitally released the following day. [1]

The album's second single "Hungry Heart" was written by Josh Teskey and released on 2 October 2020. Teskey said of the track "After spending many years running away, attempting to push the blues away, 'Hungry Heart' is the happy ending, the moment when I stopped running away and found and accepted love. The song is basically the story of spending your whole life searching for love and finding it. The hungry heart is fed! I dedicate this song to my incredible life partner Hannah and our daughter Ayva." [2]

Josh Leeson from Newcastle Star said "Subtly is the key to the album. With just acoustic guitar and harmonica, Teskey's raw vocal is left to deliver the colour and feeling. Grunwald, too, produces some of his finest work in years. " [7]

Josh Klinghoffer American musician

Josh Adam Klinghoffer is an American musician best known for being the former guitarist for the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers from 2009 to 2019, with whom he recorded two studio albums, I'm with You (2011) and The Getaway (2016), and the b-sides compilation, I'm Beside You (2013). Klinghoffer took the place of his friend and frequent collaborator John Frusciante in 2009, after a period as a touring member. Blue Gardenia is the twenty-fifth studio album by Etta James, released through the record label Private Music. It was produced by John Snyder, who had worked with James on five of her previous studio albums. Blue Gardenia contains thirteen jazz standards from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The Teskey Brothers Blues rock group

The Teskey Brothers are an Australian blues rock band from Melbourne, named after the two brothers who formed the group in 2008: Josh Teskey and Sam Teskey. The band also includes Brendon Love and Liam Gough (drums). In 2019 they signed with Glassnote Records and Ivy League Records. They have released two albums, Half Mile Harvest (2017) and Run Home Slow (2019). At the 2019 ARIA Music Awards, The Teskey Brothers were nominated for seven awards. They won three categories for the album, Run Home Slow, Best Group, Best Blues and Roots Album and Engineer of the Year.
