Raghbir Mhajan MBE , also known as Raghbir Singh Mhajan, was the first Sikh tennis line judge to officiate at Wimbledon. [1]

Biography

Born and raised in Kenya, Mhajan settled in London in 1972 and became the first Indian to officiate at Wimbledon. [2] He is famed for his run-ins with John McEnroe, especially in 1981, when he was accused of being biased in his judgments. [3]

In 2004, he was awarded an MBE for services to tennis in the 2004 Birthday Honours. [4]

Ivan Lendl Czech-American tennis player

Ivan Lendl is a former professional tennis player from Czechoslovakia who later obtained American citizenship. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Lendl was ranked world No. 1 for 270 weeks and won 94 singles titles. He won eight major singles titles and was runner-up a joint record 11 times, making him the first man to contest 19 major finals. Lendl also contested a record eight consecutive US Open finals, and won seven year-end championships.

John McEnroe defeated the five-time defending champion Björn Borg in a rematch of the previous year's final, 4–6, 7–6(7–1), 7–6(7–4), 6–4, to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1981 Wimbledon Championships. Borg was attempting to equal William Renshaw's record of six consecutive Wimbledon titles and Roy Emerson's all-time record of 12 major titles.

The tournament ran from 22 June until 4 July. It was the 95th staging of the Wimbledon Championships, and the second Grand Slam tennis event of 1981.

Borg–McEnroe rivalry Tennis rivalry

The Borg–McEnroe rivalry was a tennis rivalry between Björn Borg and John McEnroe, who met 14 times on the regular tour and 22 times in total between 1978 and 1981. Their head-to-head was even at 7-7. Their on-court rivalry was highlighted by their contrasting temperaments and styles: Borg was known for his cool and emotionless demeanor on court, while McEnroe was famed for his court-side tantrums. Because of this, their rivalry was described as "Fire and Ice".

John Edward Barrett, is a former tennis player, television commentator and author. He was born in Mill Hill, North West London, the son of Alfred Edward Barrett, a leaf tobacco merchant, and Margaret Helen Barrett. He had one sister, Irene Margaret Leppington (1925–2009), a research chemist. His father had the rare distinction of having played both for Leicester Tigers RFC as a wing three-quarter and for Leicester Fosse FC as a wing half.

The 1980 Wimbledon Men's Singles final was the championship tennis match of the gentlemen's singles tournament at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships. After 3 hours and 53 minutes of play, the four-time defending champion Björn Borg defeated John McEnroe 1–6, 7–5, 6–3, 6–7(16–18), 8–6 to win the match. McEnroe saved seven championship points during the match but ultimately lost to Borg in what was regarded at the time as the greatest tennis match ever played.

Nick Kyrgios Australian tennis player (born 1995)

Nicholas Hilmy Kyrgios is an Australian professional tennis player. In singles, he has a career high ATP singles ranking of world No. 13, achieved on 24 October 2016. Kyrgios has won six ATP titles and has reached nine ATP finals, including a Masters 1000 final at the 2017 Cincinnati Masters. In doubles, he has a career-high ranking of world No. 29, achieved on 21 March 2022, after winning a Major doubles title at the 2022 Australian Open and later making the semifinals in Miami partnering Thanasi Kokkinakis.
