Raichur Airport( ICAO : VORR) is the small airport serving Raichur city in the Karnataka state of India. The airstrip was constructed in 1942 during World War II. [1]

Historic landing

On 26 February 1957, when the Prime Minister of India Sri Jawaharlal Nehru was travelling on board a WIP IL-14, one of its engines caught fire. Its pilot, Sqn Ldr RA Rufus carried out an emergency landing at Raichur (a disused and unpaved surface). He was awarded Ashok Chakra for his presence of mind and dedication to the service. [2]

Future developments

It has been proposed to upgrade the airstrip at Raichur into a minor airport. [3] In May 2021, the Airports Authority of India gave its technical approval for constructing a 1,800 metre long runway suitable for operations of ATR-72 sized aircraft, as requested by Karnataka State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIDC). A total of 402 acres of land will be reserved for the development of the airport. Yeramus located around 10 km away from city is chosen for airport construction. [4]

Vijayapura Airport Proposed to be named as Jagatjyoti Shri Basaveshwar Airport, Vijayapura is an under-construction greenfield airport that will serve the city of Vijayapura in Karnataka, India. The airport is being built by the Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) at a cost of Rs 220 crore. The project site is located 15 km from the city on 727-acre (2.94 km2) of land in Madhabavi, located outside the city premises. The airport is expected to be ready by early 2023.

Bellary Airport is an airport serving Bellary, a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It was once served by Tata Airlines and Vayudoot. Bellary was a part of the first commercial flight of India which was from Karachi to Madras, flown by J.R.D Tata on 15 October 1932. This is the first airport of Karnataka built as early as 1932. However, as of May 2018, the airport is without commercial air service. Jindal Vijaynagar Airport, located about 36 kilometres (22 mi) west of the city, is used instead for this purpose. A new airport for Bellary is being planned as well.

The project was revived in 2021 and the airport development will be taken up the UDAN scheme at a cost of Rs 175 crore.

Narnaul Airport, also Bachhod Airstrip, is an airstrip adjacent to Bhilwara village 10 km east of Narnaul city in the Indian state of Haryana. The airstrip is used mainly by Rajiv Gandhi National Centre for Aero Sports, which was inaugurated in 2010. The airstrip is owned by the Civil Aviation Department of Haryana government.
