The 2016 Rajyotsava Awards ceremony took place at the Ravindra Kalakshetra on 1 November 2016. [1] Awarded annually by the government of Karnataka, the ceremony saw 61 individuals being awarded for achievements in various fields. [2] The number was chosen to mark the 61st anniversary of the formation of the State of Karnataka. [3]

The selection committee adhered to the yardstick of minimum age of 60 while selecting individuals for the awards. However, norms were relaxed in the field of sports and social sector. [1]

Mahadev Shivabasappa PatanaFreedom fighter106-year-old freedom fighter from Belagavi. He represented Ramdurg in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1957. Participated in the Quit India Movement and the Karnataka unification movement. He led the agitation to free Ramdurg from the British. A reward of ₹10,000 was announced by the British to catch him dead or alive. He was a follower of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Sangolli Rayanna

Sangolli Rayanna was an Indian military Shetsanadi (Sainik) and warrior in the Kittur princely state of the Karnataka. He was the Shetsanadi of the Kingdom of Kittur ruled at the time by Rani Chennamma and fought the British East India Company till his death. He belongs to Kuruba community & mainly he is pride kannadiga, His life was the subject of the 2012 Kannada film Sangolli Rayanna.

Mysore Ananthaswamy was one of the pioneers of Kannada Bhavageethe in Karnataka. He was a very popular composer and singer of Kannada Sugama Sangeetha. He composed music for several poems and bhavageethe written by well-known Kannada poets like Kuvempu, K. S. Nissar Ahmed, N S Lakshminarayana Bhatta, etc., and popularized them throughout the globe. Some of his most famous songs include: Jogada Siri Belakinali, Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate, O Nanna Chetana and Ede Tumbi Haadidenu.
Ananthaswamy played Mandolin in his early days which he purchased for 25 rupees. Later, he switched to Harmonium as there was a difficulty in fine tuning Mandolin.

Karnataka Rajyotsava Karnataka formation day

Kannada Rajyotsava, also known as Karnataka Formation Day or Karnataka Day, is celebrated on 1 November of every year. This was the day in 1956 when all the Kannada language-speaking regions of south western India were merged to form the state of Karnataka.

Captain Gorur Ramaswamy Iyengar Gopinath is an Indian entrepreneur, the founder of Air Deccan, a retired Captain of the Indian Army, an author, and a politician.

The Rajyotsava Prashasti or Rajyotsava Awards, the second highest civilian honor of the Karnataka state of India are conferred annually by the Karnataka Government on the occasion of the establishment of the state on 1 November celebrated as the Kannada Rajyotsava.

S. K. Shivakumar Indian scientist

S. K. Shivakumar was an Indian scientist from Karnataka state who worked at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) centres. He was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 2015.

The Jakanachari Award is a state award of Karnataka conferred on talented sculptors and craftsmen from the state. These awards are given away every year by the government of Karnataka to celebrate the contributions of the legendary sculptor Amarashilpi Jakanachari.

Wooday P. Krishna

Wooday P. Krishna is an Indian educationist, technocrat and social activist. Krishna is also the Honorary General Secretary of Seshadripuram Educational Trust, President, Karnataka Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, Former Chairman Gandhi Peace Foundation and former Chairman, The Institution of Engineers (India), Karnataka State Centre. He has served as a member of State Disaster Management Authority, Government of Karnataka in the rank of Minister of State, to develop proactive mitigating strategies for any disasters in the State.

The Government of Karnataka announced the Rajyotsava awards for the year 2014. The awardees included 59 noted eminent individuals from various fields on the occasions of the 59th anniversary of the Karnataka state formation day. The awards were given away at the Ravindra Kalakshetra in Bangalore on 1 November 2014. The 2014 awards saw 1924 nominations that were screened by a panel. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah announced that the government would bring out commemorative postal stamps of the 59 awardees.

Master Hirannaiah Indian Theatre actor

Hirannaiah or Hirannayya known by his stage name Master Hirannaiah was an Indian film actor in the Kannada film industry and a theatre artist in Karnataka, India. Akkai Padmashali

Akkai Padmashali is an Indian transgender activist, motivational speaker, and singer. For her work in activism she has received the Rajyotsava Prashasti, the second highest civilian honor of the state of Karnataka, and an honorary doctorate from the Indian Virtual University for Peace and Education. She is also the first transgender person in Karnataka to register their marriage.

Sakuntala Narasimhan Indian classical vocalist, journalist, and consumer rights activist

Sakuntala Narasimhan is an Indian journalist, consumer rights activist, and classical vocalist from the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of Hindustani classical music. She was a disciple of Hafeez Ahmed Khan and is the only vocalist in India to have performed in the National Programme of Music organized by Doordarshan and All India Radio in both Carnatic and Hindustani styles. She was trained in Carnatic classical music by vocalists Musiri Subramania Iyer and Thanjavur Brinda. She is also the only artiste doing a “self-jugalbandi” juxtaposing the two styles.

Kanaka Murthy was an Indian sculptor, working primarily in stone. She received several awards in India for her work, including the Jakanachari Award in 2011, and the Rajyotsava Award in 1996. A number of her sculptures were commissioned and installed in public places in India, particularly in temples for worship, as well as public installations in the city of Bengaluru. She also wrote several books about Indian art and sculpture.
