Biography

Ratan Kahar (born 1935) is a veteran folk singer of Bhadu and Jhumur songs of rural Bengal in India. The Government of India awarded the Padma Shri, the country's fourth highest civilian award, in 2024. [2] His famous song Boroloker Biti Lo gained popularity in 1972 with Swapna Chakraborty's voice. [3] The original line of this song Lal Genda Phul caused controversy [4] when popular rap artist Badsha released his "Genda Phul" in 2020. Due to that controversy, Ratan Kahar's music creation, achievements, songs, artistry came to the fore. Badshah settled the dispute by giving him five lakh rupees. [5]

He was reported to be credited with over 400 folk songs, 102 folk dances and 10 dance dramas. He died on 30 July, 2020 due to cardiac arrest.

Pushpa Hans Kapoor (1917–2011) was an Indian playback singer and actor of the Hindi and Punjabi film industries in the 1940s and 1950s. She was known for her songs in the 1950 Hindi film, Sheesh Mahal and her acting in the 1949 film Apna Desh. She was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of the Padma Shri.

"Genda Phool" is a 2020 Hindi pop song by Indian rapper Badshah featuring playback singer Payal Dev. The music video for the song features Sri Lankan actress Jacqueline Fernandez, and Badshah. It stood as the 4th most-watched music video on YouTube for the year 2020 across the world. It has above 1 billion views on YouTube as of September 2023. The song is a remake of the song Boro Loker BitiLo originally sung by Swapna Chakraborty. The main verse 'Boroloker Beti lo' is taken from the Bengali folk song which was originally written, composed and tuned by Ratan Kahar. This Bengali folk song was very popular during the late 60s and 70s in West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Benichandra Jamatia was a Tripuri Indian folk writer and litterateur, known for his contribution to the fields of literature, songs and education in Tripura. He is credited with introducing the baul singing tradition of West Bengal in Kokborok language for the first time. In 2020, he was awarded the Padma Shri (2020), the fourth-highest civilian award in India. He died at his home on 14 December 2020.
