Ray Selfe was an English film director, producer, screenwriter, editor, actor and movie theatre owner. [1] [2]
Selfe was born into a working-class family in Croydon, Surrey and the age of ten found a passion for film. [1] Selfe was later expelled from Pitman's College at the age of fourteen and became a projectionist at a local movie theatre and ran a mobile cinema, taking film shows to youth clubs. [1] In 1950, he had a brief national service in the RAF and was later discharged on medical grounds. [1]
As a filmmaker, Selfe later went on to work on such films as Four Dimensions of Greta (1972), White Cargo (1973), Emmanuelle in Soho (1981) and Don't Open till Christmas (1984). [1]
Four Dimensions of Greta (1972) is a low budget British comedy sexploitation film, directed by Pete Walker, featuring four 3-D film sequences. It was the first British film to be made in 3-D, and the tagline on the poster read, "A girl in your lap". The film is also known as "The Three Dimensions of Greta".
White Cargo is a 1973 British comedy film directed by Ray Selfe and starring David Jason and Imogen Hassall.
Emmanuelle in Soho is a 1981 British sex film directed by David Hughes and produced by David Sullivan, and starring Angie Quick, Julie Lee and John M. East. The film tells the story of half-Chinese Kate Benson and her photographer husband Paul who share their Bayswater home with a nymphomaniac stripper, Emmanuelle. The two women attempt to find work in the sex industry in Soho, and get mixed up with a sleazy, and unscrupulous theatrical agent, Bill Anderson.

After emigrating to Sydney with his family from England as a boy he became an apprentice engineer, following his father's trade. Selfe designed many bridges, docks, boats, and much precision machinery for the city. He also introduced new refrigeration, hydraulic, electrical and transport systems. For these achievements he received international acclaim during his lifetime. Decades before the Sydney Harbour Bridge was built, the city came close to building a Selfe-designed steel cantilever bridge across the harbour after he won the second public competition for a bridge design.
Paris Theatre, formerly Third Avenue Theatre and also known as Paris Theater or Ray's Paris Theatre, is an historic building in Portland, Oregon's Old Town Chinatown neighborhood, in the United States. The theatre was constructed in 1890 and opened as a burlesque house. It was later converted to a cinema, then a club and music venue, before serving as an adult movie theater until 2016. The building is now a live venue and nightclub.
