Reginald Thomas (born May 20,1953) is an American politician from the state of Kentucky. A member of the Democratic Party,Thomas is a member of the Kentucky Senate and currently serves as the minority caucus chair. [1] [2] Thomas' election in 2012 marked the first time that two African Americans served in the Kentucky Senate concurrently. [3] Thomas is an attorney and law professor;he earned an A.B. degree from Dartmouth College in 1975 and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School in 1978. [4] [5]
On July 1,2017,Thomas announced he would challenge Representative Andy Barr in Kentucky's 6th congressional district during the 2018 midterm elections. [6] He lost the Democratic primary to Amy McGrath,who then lost the general election to Barr.
The Kentucky Senate is the upper house of the Kentucky General Assembly. The Kentucky Senate is composed of 38 members elected from single-member districts throughout the Commonwealth. There are no term limits for Kentucky senators. The Kentucky Senate meets at the Kentucky State Capitol in Frankfort annually beginning in January. Sessions last for 60 legislative days in even-numbered years and 30 legislative days in odd-numbered years.
David Lewis Williams is an American attorney,Republican politician,and a judge from the U.S. state of Kentucky. From the year 1987 to 2012,Williams represented Senate District 16,a position he secured upon the retirement of fellow Republican Doug Moseley. When Republicans gained control of the state senate in 2000,Williams was chosen as President of the Senate,and held that post continuously until his resignation in November 2012. In September 2010,he announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor in the 2011 gubernatorial election. On May 17,2011,Williams secured the Republican nomination over Tea Party movement-backed Phil Moffet. However,he lost the general election by twenty points to incumbent Democratic Governor Steve Beshear. In November 2012,Williams resigned his Senate seat to accept a circuit court judgeship.
The Kentucky Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the U.S. state of Kentucky. It is currently the minority party in the state,as the rival Republican Party of Kentucky overwhelmingly dominates in the state legislature,congressional delegation,and presidential elections. However,the party does currently control the governorship and lieutenant governorship,and maintains some strength in local elections.
