Rene Gonzalez Architects (RGA) is an American architectural firm based in Miami, Florida. The work of their interdisciplinary design office encompasses architecture, interior architecture, landscape design, and product design. The firm's work includes museum and gallery spaces, hospitality, commercial, retail, and residential projects.

History

The office was founded in 1997 by Cuban-American architect Rene Gonzalez (b. 1963). Gonzalez received a Bachelor of Design degree from the University of Florida and holds a Master of Architecture degree from UCLA.

Work

RGA's cultural, museum, and gallery projects include the building for CasaCuba at Florida International University, a home for the discussion and study of Cuban affairs, and the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation (BCF), a non-profit foundation in Miami. BCF was designed to house the lighting installation Aten Reign by James Turrell, a work that debuted at the artist's retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in 2013, and Richard Serra’s Passage of Time, an undulating 218-foot (66 m) long Cor-Ten steel sculpture, in addition to works by Larry Bell, Fred Sandback, Anish Kapoor, and others. Other museum projects include the 2014 master plan study for the expansion of the Wolfsonian-FIU museum, a building Gonzalez renovated alongside Sarasota School of Architecture architect Mark Hampton in 1992. [3] [4]

The firm also designed the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO) for Ella Fontanals-Cisneros in 2005. The project is noted for its use of more than one million Bisazza glass mosaic tiles on the façade. [5] [6]

Key exhibition design projects have included the installation for the third (RED) Auction., [7] which raised $10.5 million, with matching funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to support the fight against AIDS on December 5, 2018. [8]

RGA also designed the exhibition titled 'Speed Limits' at the Wolfsonian-FIU in 2010 and designed and curated the product design exhibition titled 'Design Matters' at Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in 2000. [9] [10]

Hospitality and commercial projects by the firm include a new wing for The Standard Hotel in Miami, [11] event company KARLA, restaurant Plant, and four boutiques for boutique Alchemist, the flagship of which is located in the 1111 Lincoln Road parking garage designed by architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Notable residential projects include the Indian Creek Residence, which twice broke residential sales records in Miami-Dade County, first in 2012 at $45 million [14] and again in 2019 for $50 million. [15]

In 2017, RGA completed the Prairie Avenue Residence in Miami Beach, an elevated house designed to address the challenge of sea-level rise. [16] [17] The house was featured in The New York Times and in the BBC Two miniseries The World's Most Extraordinary Homes. [16]

Awards

The Miami chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) recognized the firm's work in 2012 with an H. Samuel Kruse Silver Medal for Design [23] and in 2011 RGA was selected as Firm of the Year. [24] RGA also earned two national AIA awards, one in 2006 for KARLA Conceptual Events [25] and the other in 2011 for Alchemist. [12]

The firm's monograph, titled 'Not Lost in Translation', was published by Monacelli Press in 2018 and its foreword was written by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. [26]

Gonzalez was named as one of 50 Top Coastal Architects of 2015 by Ocean Home magazine [31] and earned the University of Florida’s School of Architecture 2010 Alumni Design Excellence Award.

Gonzalez has taught and lectured at UCLA, University of Virginia, University of Florida, University of Miami, and Florida International University. He was an honorary trustee at MoCA Miami and the Wolfsonian-FIU advisory board, and was Chair of the City of Miami Beach Design Review and the Historic Preservation Board.

Lincoln Road United States historic place

Lincoln Road Mall is a pedestrian road running east–west parallel between 16th Street and 17th Street in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. Once completely open to vehicular traffic, it now hosts a pedestrian mall replete with shops, restaurants, galleries, and other businesses between Washington Avenue with a traffic accessible street extending east to the Atlantic Ocean and west to Alton Road with a traffic accessible street extending to Biscayne Bay.

Florida International University School of Architecture

The FIU School of Architecture is the architecture school at Florida International University, located in Miami, Florida in the United States. It is one of the university's 26 schools and colleges and is a school within the College of Architecture and the Arts. The school was founded in the 1980s.

Lydia Rubio is a Cuban-American artist, born in La Habana, Cuba (1946). After attending the University of Florida and Universita degli Studi di Firenze, she obtained a Master's in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where she pursued visual studies with Rudolf Arnheim.

Slade Architecture is a New York City based architecture and design firm founded in 2002 by Hayes and James Slade. The firm has completed a diverse range of domestic and international projects. Its work has been exhibited and published widely. The Architectural League of New York selected Slade Architecture as a winner of its 2010 Emerging Voices, an annual invited competition for North American firms and individuals with distinct design voices and significant bodies of realized work. Slade Architecture was selected by the New York City Department of Design & Construction to participate in its Excellence in Design and Construction Program in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2016.

Max Strang is the founding principal of Strang Design, a Miami-based architecture firm. The Florida chapter of the American Institute of Architecture gave him the Medal of Honor for Design in 2019, the highest award the organization bestows. Vanessa Grout is an American real estate entrepreneur, investor and journalist. She was CEO of South Florida real estate brokerage Douglas Elliman during which time she restructured and expanded the company throughout South Florida. She is currently CEO of OKO Real Estate, an affiliate of International property development company OKO Group, founded by Vladislav Doronin developer and CEO of Aman Resorts, and recently acquired a 6.7-acre site in downtown Fort Lauderdale. David M. Harper (architect) American architect

David Michael Harper is an American architect, business leader and sustainable energy advocate. He is the Chief Design Officer, Practice Leader and Director for SNC-Lavalin Atkins. Previously before assuming his current role he was the Global Higher Education Practice Leader and the Managing Director for HKS, Inc.

1111 Lincoln Road

1111 Lincoln Road is a parking garage in the South Beach section of Miami Beach, Florida, designed by the internationally known Swiss architectural firm of Herzog & de Meuron. It is located at the western end of the Lincoln Road Mall at the intersection with Alton Road, and can house some 300 cars. Since its opening in 2010, it has attracted considerable interest because its unique appearance is different from more traditional parking garage designs.

Mitchell "Micky" Wolfson Jr. is an American businessman, collector, and the founder of the Wolfsonian Museum in Miami Beach, Florida, and Genoa–Nervi, Italy.

Ella Fontanals-Cisneros is a Cuban-born philanthropist and art collector with an abiding passion, and discerning eye for contemporary art and design. Born in Cuba and raised in Venezuela, her vision has made a significant impact on the Miami arts community and arts organizations around the globe. She is the founder and Honorary President of the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO).

Oppenheim Architecture is an architecture, planning, and interior practice based in Miami, New York, and Basel founded in 1999 by Chad Oppenheim. The firm has received multiple distinctions, including over 45 AIA Awards. Projects range between hospitality, commercial mixed-use, retail, and residential buildings in over 25 countries. The firm is notable for designing L.A. Villa, film director Michael Bay's residence. In 2018, the practice received the National Design Award for Interior Design by Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Guy Wesley Peterson is an American architect based in Sarasota, Florida. Peterson is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the recipient of the AIA Florida Gold Medal for his outstanding contributions to architecture. He has designed more than 200 structures in southwest Florida, including notable private and public works. Peterson is an adjunct professor of architecture at the University of Florida College of Design, Construction and Planning, and the author of Naked: The Architecture of Guy Peterson.

Fernando Wong Panamanian landscape designer

Fernando Wong is a Panamanian landscape designer born in Panama City. He moved to the United States in 2001 and established his landscape architecture firm, Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design, Inc. in Miami Beach, Florida in 2005. Since then he has opened additional offices in Palm Beach, Florida and Southampton, New York. Wong designs large private gardens, public parks, museums and hotels, and has won several design awards. His television show Clipped with Martha Stewart debuted on the Discovery+ and HGTV channels on March 12, 2021.

Suwon Lee (b.1977) is a Korean-Venezuelan artist based in Madrid, Spain.

Robert Swartburg American architect (1895–1975)

B. Robert Swartburg was an American architect working in New York and Florida primarily known for his Modern and Streamline Moderne architectural style. He was one of the leading modernist architects in South Florida contributing greatly to the development of MiMo Modern style in the post- WWII 40s and 50's. In his 35-year career he is said to have designed over 1000 buildings. Swartburg was also an accomplished artist who painted for pleasure, and executed murals and sculptures to embellish his buildings.
