Representaciones Televisivas (Televised Representations) S.A., commonly known as Repretel or Grupo Repretel is a Costa Rican media company, founded by Remigio Gonzalez, that came into competition with Teletica and Canal9. Repretel owns Costa Rican channels 4, 6, 11 and 2. [1] Repretel began operating in 1993 with Channel 9, in 2000 the lease expired and moved to Channel 4. [2] The company also operates 11 radio stations. [3]

In 2012, Repretel bought Channel 2, from Mrs. Roxie Blen and branded the channel as CDR 2.

TV Stations

Channel 6

Channel 6 is the flagship TV station, carries the most popular shows, entertainment, sports and news of the network. The news has four daily editions. Included in the entertainment programs is 2 and a half hours of programs aimed towards women. [3]

Repretel's Channel 6 has content similar to Teletica Channel 7's as they both mainly show United States shows and movies that are dubbed into Spanish. [4] The Soap opera My Sin was broadcast on Repretel's Channel 6 in 2011 because television programming's head, Annette Mejias, said that she wanted to show more programs with independent women. [5]

Repretel Channel 6 broadcasts the World Cup. During the 2006 World Cup, the channel's audience reported that the signal was poor. The cable company CableTica, which broadcasts the World Cup 24 hours after Repretel airs them, was accused of messing with the signal. [6] Channel 6 also broadcasts the Mexican animated series El Chavo which is based on a live action show of the same name.

Channel 4

Channel 4 mainly broadcasts programs aimed towards children along with films aired during the weekdays. [3]

Channel 11

Repretel's Channel 11 is on the air from midnight to noon with live footage of events occurring at night. [7] When NBC lost the right to broadcast in Costa Rica, the 2008 Summer Olympics was broadcast by Repretel's Channel 11. Xpertv Channel 33 broadcast it as well. [7]

Channel 2

Channel 2 transmits live radio talk shows format, from CDR-Radio Monumental station. Operates under the name of CDR-2 Central de Radios

All channels have both local news and news from abroad. [8] Repretel airs the Billboard Latin Music Awards. [9]

In 2006, Repretel started using two Duet MicroX systems to broadcast their programs. Duet MicroX gives Repretel the ability to create graphics, animation, and news highlights easily. [10]

Repretel's channels are programmed from Miami. Because of Repretel being based in Miami, the publisher of La Prensa Libre said that it could be harmful to Costa Rica culture. [1] The company controls nearly 30 percent of Costa Rica's advertising. [11]

Radio Stations

Repretel owns 11 radio stations in Costa Rica, all branded as CDRCentral de Radios, the most notable stations are Radio Monumental and Radio Reloj.

Competition

In 2000, Repretel's channels directly competed with another Costa Rican media company, Teletica Channel 7. Even though Repretel had a large advertising revenue, Teletica came to dominate due to better ratings. The advertising revenue of Repretel in 2000 was $56 million. [12] As a result of the competition between the two media companies, Teletica was prompted to upgrade its programming and equipment. [13] A journalist believes that the quality of Repretel's channels may be "the manipulation of information" by an international media conglomerate. [1]

Leonora Jiménez Monge is a Costa Rican beauty pageant titleholder and the original winner of 2005 Miss Asia Pacific International. She was dethroned because of her participation in Miss World 2005 and the Miss Asia Pacific title was passed to the 1st runner up, Evgeniya Lapova of Russia. Leonora did not place among the semifinalists in Miss World.

Canal 4 is a private Costa Rican television channel, owned and operated by Repretel. It was the second television station acquired by Repretel in Costa Rica.

Canal 6 is a private Costa Rican television channel, owned and operated by Repretel. It is the flagship TV station of the media group.

Canal 11 is a private Costa Rican television channel, owned and operated by Repretel since 1996. It was the first station owned and operated by Repretel-Albavision group in Costa Rica.

Canal 7 is a private Costa Rican television network, owned and operated by Teletica's founders, the Picado family. It was the first television station in Costa Rica.

Teletica Costa Rican television broadcaster

Televisora de Costa Rica S.A., known as Teletica is a Costa Rican television broadcaster, founded in 1958. It operates Teletica Canal 7, Teletica Canal 33, and, since 1991, CableTica.

Canal 9 is the second television station established in Costa Rica, having begun broadcasts in 1961 as Tic Tac Canal 9.

La Prensa Libre was a daily newspaper published in San José, the capital city of Costa Rica. It was the country's oldest continually published newspaper, founded 11 June 1889.

Remigio Ángel González is a Mexican-born owner of the Latin American media network Albavisión. He has lived in Miami since 1987. The network is named for his wife Alba Elvira Lorenzana, who is from Guatemala. González was estimated to be worth $350m in 2002, and by some accounts is now worth $2bn. González has a conservative political stance, but he aims to keep a low profile and cooperate with host country governments. As part of this strategy, he is said to have modified the editorial lines of his stations, particularly in Guatemala and Nicaragua, to accommodate government preferences.

Abortion in Costa Rica is severely restricted by criminal law. Currently, abortions are allowed in Costa Rica only in order to preserve the life or physical health of the woman. Abortions are illegal in almost all cases, including when the pregnancy is a result of rape or incest and when the fetus suffers from medical problems or birth defects. Both social and economic factors have led to this legal status. It remains unclear whether abortions are legal to preserve the mental health of the woman, though the 2013 United Nations abortion report says Costa Rica does allow abortions concerning mental health of a woman.

Miguel Andonie Fernández was a Honduran chemist, pharmacologist, academic, politician and businessman of paternal Palestinian origin. He was associated with the Colegio de Químicos y Farmacéuticos. He was the chairman of Multimedia, SA and a real estate investor, and invested much in a chain of pharmacies in Honduras. He owned one of Honduras's most notable radio stations, Radio America. The National Congress of Honduras awarded him the Honor of Merit for his contributions to politics and science.

2009 Citizens Action Party presidential primary

A primary election was held for the first time among the members of Costa Rica’s Citizens’ Action Party (PAC), known as the Citizens' National Convention for the selection of the party's candidate in the 2010 general election. This was a closed primary, as potential electors were required to register before the election up till April 30, 2009.

Costa Rica in the OTI Festival

Costa Rica and its two OTI member stations Teletica and Repretel debuted in the OTI Festival in 1976 in Acapulco, one year later than most of its Central American neighbours. The first Costa Rican entrant in the song contest was Felix Ángel with a patriotic song called "Patria" (Homeland) which didn't receive a warm reception by the juries and placed 13th, scoring only two points. Since their debut, this country took part in every edition of the event until the last edition, which was held again in Acapulco.

Julia Carolina Sánchez Rangel, also known as La Chama, is a Venezuela-born Costa Rican journalist, presenter, and businesswoman. She is known for her work on Repretel's Channel 11.

Inés Aleida Sánchez Guarde de Revuelta is a Cuban-Costa Rican journalist. She is currently the host of the television program Teleclub, a position she has held since its premiere in 1963. She has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-serving presenter of an educational television program.
