Rob Speyer (born 1969) is an American real estate developer. He is the CEO [1] of New York City real estate company Tishman Speyer. [2] [3]

Early life and education

Speyer was born to a Jewish family, the son of Lynn (née Tishman) and Jerry Speyer. [4] His great-grandfather, Julius Tishman, founded Tishman Realty and Construction; and his father Jerry Speyer and his maternal grandfather, Robert Tishman, founded the real estate development firm Tishman Speyer. [5] His parents divorced in 1987. [6] In 1992, he graduated magna cum laude from Columbia College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. [7] He is an emeritus member of the Board of Visitors at Columbia College. He worked as a reporter for the New York Daily News before joining Tishman Speyer. [8] [9]

Career

In 2015, Speyer became Tishman Speyer's president and chief executive officer. [10]

Speyer has driven the firm's growth and entry into new markets across the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America, and the development of innovative new business lines including launching a RMB-denominated real estate fund; co-founding Breakthrough Properties, a life science real estate development company; creating a proptech-focused SPAC, the first by a real estate company; and launching the company’s first proptech venture fund.

In recent years, Tishman Speyer has engaged in development partnerships with such institutions as Harvard University, the San Francisco Giants, the San Diego Padres and Beijing Capital Steel to create the next generation of dynamic, large-scale urban neighborhoods.

Over the last 25 years, he has led Tishman Speyer's reinvention of Rockefeller Center in New York City and its over 6 million rentable square feet, capped by the creation of Top of the Rock.

In 2012, Rob directed Tishman Speyer's launch of a RMB-denominated real estate fund, the first ever sponsored by a non-Chinese company.

In 2019, Rob co-founded Breakthrough Properties, a life science real estate investment, development, and operations firm, with Bellco Capital.  

Speyer has served as a member of the Real Estate Board of New York's (REBNY) executive committee since 2004, and became the chairman of the committee in 2013. [11] [12] He was named chairman of the advisory board of the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City in 2006, reappointed in 2014 by Mayor Bill de Blasio [11] and then reappointed by Mayor Adams.

Speyer sits on the board of trustees of New York-Presbyterian Hospital; the board of visitors of Columbia College (emeritus); [13] the board of directors of the Real Estate Roundtable; [14] the board of trustees of the Citizens Budget Commission; [2] and on the board of directors of Exor. [15]

Rob has driven the firm's growth and entry into new markets across the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America, and the development of innovative new business lines.

Personal life

In 2008, Speyer married Anne-Cecilie Engell. Originally from Denmark, Engell graduated from Cornell University and received her MBA from New York University. [6]

TaunusTurm is the project name for a complex of two buildings, a 170 m (560 ft) skyscraper and a 63 m (207 ft) high-rise residential building, in Frankfurt, Germany. The site is located in Frankfurt's financial district, the Bankenviertel, at the corner of Neue Mainzer Straße and Taunustor. The site borders a park named Taunusanlage, which gave the tower its name. The buildings were designed by architecture firm Gruber + Kleine-Kraneburg. The start of construction was in April 2011 and the first tenants moved in February 2014.

The Spiral, also known as 66 Hudson Boulevard, is a 66-floor skyscraper under construction in Hudson Yards, Manhattan, New York City. The project was announced in 2016 by real estate developer Tishman Speyer as a 1,041-foot (317 m) skyscraper with 2.85 million square feet (265,000 m2) and 66 floors. The tower is being designed by Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group, which also designed the nearby West 57.
