Investment banking pertains to certain activities of a financial services company or a corporate division that engages in providing advisory-based services on financial transactions for clients,such as institutional investors,corporations,and governments. Traditionally associated with corporate finance,such a bank might assist in raising financial capital by underwriting or acting as the client's agent in the issuance of debt or equity securities. An investment bank may also assist companies involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and provide ancillary services such as market making,trading of derivatives and equity securities,FICC services or research. Most investment banks maintain prime brokerage and asset management departments in conjunction with their investment research businesses. As an industry,it is broken up into the Bulge Bracket,Middle Market,and boutique market.
The Goldman Sachs Group,Inc. is an American multinational investment bank and financial services company. Founded in 1869,Goldman Sachs is headquartered in Lower Manhattan in New York City,with regional headquarters in many international financial centers. Goldman Sachs is the second largest investment bank in the world by revenue and is ranked 55th on the Fortune 500 list of the largest United States corporations by total revenue. In Forbes Global 2000 2023,Goldman Sachs ranked 34th. It is considered a systemically important financial institution by the Financial Stability Board.
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is a committee within the Federal Reserve System that is charged under United States law with overseeing the nation's open market operations. This Federal Reserve committee makes key decisions about interest rates and the growth of the United States money supply. Under the terms of the original Federal Reserve Act,each of the Federal Reserve banks was authorized to buy and sell in the open market bonds and short term obligations of the United States Government,bank acceptances,cable transfers,and bills of exchange. Hence,the reserve banks were at times bidding against each other in the open market. In 1922,an informal committee was established to execute purchases and sales. The Banking Act of 1933 formed an official FOMC.
Stephen Friedman is an American economist. He is a former chairman of the US President's Intelligence Advisory Board and former chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. He was nominated on October 27,2005,to replace Brent Scowcroft in the position.
Ben Shalom Bernanke is an American economist who served as the 14th chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014. After leaving the Federal Reserve,he was appointed a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution. During his tenure as chairman,Bernanke oversaw the Federal Reserve's response to the late-2000s financial crisis,for which he was named the 2009 Time Person of the Year. Before becoming Federal Reserve chairman,Bernanke was a tenured professor at Princeton University and chaired the Department of Economics there from 1996 to September 2002,when he went on public service leave. Bernanke was awarded the 2022 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences,jointly with Douglas Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig,"for research on banks and financial crises",more specifically for his analysis of the Great Depression.
The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas covers the Eleventh Federal Reserve District of the United States,which includes Texas,northern Louisiana and southern New Mexico,a district sometimes referred to as the Oil Patch. The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas is one of 12 regional Reserve Banks that,along with the Board of Governors in Washington,D.C.,make up the U.S. central bank. The Dallas Fed is the only one where all external branches reside in the same state . The Dallas Fed has branch offices in El Paso,Houston,and San Antonio. The Dallas bank is located at 2200 Pearl St. in the Uptown neighborhood of Oak Lawn,just north of downtown Dallas and the Dallas Arts District. Prior to 1992,the bank was located at 400 S. Akard Street,in the Government District in Downtown Dallas. The older Dallas Fed building,which opened in 1921,was built in the Beaux-arts style,with large limestone structure with massive carved eagles and additional significant detailing;it is a City of Dallas Designated Landmark structure. The current Dallas Fed building,opened in September 1992,was designed by three architectural firms:Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates,New York;Sikes Jennings Kelly &Brewer,Houston;and John S. Chase,FAIA,Dallas and Houston,Dallas-based Austin Commercial Inc. served as project manager and general contractor.
Cathy E. Minehan was President and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston from 1994 until her retirement in July 2007. Minehan also served as a member of the Federal Open Market Committee,the body responsible for U.S. monetary policy. She was "appointed Dean of the School of Management of Simmons College,a private university,in August 2011 and is Managing Director of Arlington Advisory Partners,a private advisory services firm."

Cohn was appointed vice-chairman of IBM on January 5,2021.

Edward Gerald Corrigan was an American banker who was the seventh President of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Vice-Chairman of the Federal Open Market Committee. Corrigan served as a partner and managing director in the Office of the Chairman at Goldman Sachs and was appointed chairman of GS Bank USA,the bank holding company of Goldman Sachs,in September 2008 until retiring in 2016. He was also a member of the Group of Thirty,an influential international body of leading financiers and academics.
When Genius Failed:The Rise and Fall of Long-Term Capital Management is a book by Roger Lowenstein published by Random House on October 9,2000. The book tells an unauthorized account of the creation,early success,abrupt collapse,and rushed bailout of Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM). LTCM was a tightly held American hedge fund founded in 1993 which commanded more than $100 billion in assets at its height,then collapsed abruptly in August and September 1998. Prompted by concerns about LTCM's thousands of derivative contracts,in order to avoid a panic by banks and investors worldwide,the Federal Reserve Bank of New York stepped in to organize a bailout with the various major banks at risk.

Adebayo "Bayo" O. Ogunlesi is a Nigerian lawyer and investment banker. He is currently chairman and managing partner at the private equity firm Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP). Ogunlesi was the former head of global investment banking at Credit Suisse First Boston before being promoted to chief client officer and executive vice chairman.

The Volcker Rule is section 619 of the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. The rule was originally proposed by American economist and former United States Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker in 2010 to restrict United States banks from making certain kinds of speculative investments that do not benefit their customers. It was not implemented until July 2015. Volcker argued that such speculative activity played a key role in the 2007–2008 financial crisis. The rule is often referred to as a ban on proprietary trading by commercial banks,whereby deposits are used to trade on the bank's own accounts,although a number of exceptions to this ban were included in the Dodd–Frank law.
Philadelphia financier Jay Cooke established the first modern American investment bank during the Civil War era. However,private banks had been providing investment banking functions since the beginning of the 19th century and many of these evolved into investment banks in the post-bellum era. However,the evolution of firms into investment banks did not follow a single trajectory. For example,some currency brokers such as Prime,Ward &King and John E. Thayer and Brother moved from foreign exchange operations to become private banks,taking on some investment bank functions. Other investment banks evolved from mercantile firms such as Thomas Biddle and Co. and Alexander Brothers.
Goldman Sachs,an investment bank,has been the subject of controversies. The company has been criticized for lack of ethical standards,working with dictatorial regimes,close relationships with the U.S. federal government via a "revolving door" of former employees,and driving up prices of commodities through futures speculation. It has also been criticized by its employees for 100-hour work weeks,high levels of employee dissatisfaction among first-year analysts,abusive treatment by superiors,a lack of mental health resources,and extremely high levels of stress in the workplace leading to physical discomfort.

His article,“Beating Benchmarks,”won the Second Annual Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award for Outstanding Article after it was published in the Journal of Portfolio Management. He holds three patents for financial instruments. One of his patents was the Wavefront system,which describes how economic shocks ripple through the economy into company performance,market value and equity returns in the US market.
