documenta is an exhibition of contemporary art which takes place every five years in Kassel, Germany. It was founded by artist, teacher and curator Arnold Bode in 1955 as part of the Bundesgartenschau which took place in Kassel at that time. It was an attempt to bring Germany up to speed with modern art, both banishing and repressing the cultural darkness of Nazism. This first documenta featured many artists who are generally considered to have had a significant influence on modern art. The more recent documentas feature art from all continents; nonetheless most of it is site-specific.
The São Paulo Museum of Art is an art museum located on Paulista Avenue in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. It is well known for its headquarters, a 1968 concrete and glass structure designed by Lina Bo Bardi, whose main body is supported by two lateral beams over a 74 metres (243 ft) freestanding space, considered a landmark of the city and a main symbol of modern Brazilian architecture.

Lina Bo Bardi, born Achillina Bo, was an Italian-born Brazilian modernist architect. A prolific architect and designer, she devoted her working life, most of it spent in Brazil, to promoting the social and cultural potential of architecture and design. While she studied under radical Italian architects, she quickly became intrigued with Brazilian vernacular design and how it could influence a modern Brazilian architecture. During her lifetime it was difficult to be accepted among the local Brazilian architects, because she was both a "foreigner" and a woman.
Hito Steyerl is a German filmmaker, moving image artist, writer, and innovator of the essay documentary. Her principal topics of interest are media, technology, and the global circulation of images. Steyerl holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. She is currently a professor of New Media Art at the Berlin University of the Arts, where she co-founded the Research Center for Proxy Politics, together with Vera Tollmann and Boaz Levin.

Florian Pumhösl is a contemporary artist based in Vienna, mainly known for his works that employ abstract visual language to reflect on the diverse manifestations of modernity. His interests include "historical formal vocabulary of modernism," and "the genealogical derivation of a particular form" and its sociopolitical setting. His work has been described as being "between the two poles of formalism and historicity." Often taking the form of a series, his works span a wide range of media, including films, installations, objects, and glass paintings.
Jef Geys was a Belgian artist born in Leopoldsburg, Belgium. Geys is known for his photography, painting, sculpture, films, installation art, publishing activities, and experimentation in art education.
Ruth Noack is a German curator and art historian. Noack and Roger M. Buergel, co-curated documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany. In 2019, it was announced that Noack would become the founding executive director of The Corner at Whitman-Walker, a new cultural institution in Washington, D.C., opening in early 2020 as a venue for multidisciplinary artistic expression attached to Whitman-Walker Health.
Bouchra Khalili is a Moroccan-French visual artist. Raised between Morocco and France, she studied Film at Sorbonne Nouvelle and Fine Arts at École nationale supérieure d'arts de Paris-Cergy. She lives in Berlin, Germany.
Banu Cennetoğlu is a visual artist based in Istanbul. She uses photography, installation, and printed matter to explore the classification, appropriation and distribution of data and knowledge. Her work deals with listings, collections, rearrangements, and archives. Cennetoğlu co-represented Turkey at the 53rd International Venice Biennale with Ahmet Öğüt in 2009. She is the founding director of BAS (2006–ongoing), an Istanbul-based artist-run initiative that collects and displays artists’ books and printed material as artwork. In Turkey, she is "best known as an apostle of the artist’s book."
Space Caviar is an architecture and research studio based in Genoa, Italy. It was founded in 2013 by architects Joseph Grima and Tamar Shafrir. Their work has been shown at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Victoria and Albert Museum, Biennale Interieur, Vitra Design Museum and the Munich Film Museum.
Mária Bartuszová (1936–1996) was a Slovakian sculptor known for her abstract white plaster sculptures. Her work is included in the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava and the Tate in London. Her artwork will be part of Venice Biennale titled "Milk of Dreams"
Danica Dakić in Sarajevo) is a Bosnian artist and university professor. She works primarily with video art, installation and photography. Her works have been widely exhibited, including at documenta 12 (2007) and at the 58th Venice Biennale (2019), where she represented Bosnia and Herzegovina. Dakić lives and works in Düsseldorf, Weimar, and Sarajevo.
