The Royal Curragh Golf Club is a private members' club with an 18-hole golf course in County Kildare, Ireland. Dating from 1858, it is the oldest golf club in Ireland. Located next to Curragh Camp, its course has historically had strong links to the military.
The golf club was founded in 1858, with the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Archibald Montgomerie, 13th Earl of Eglinton, reputedly being a "frequent visitor to the course". [1]
On 21 September 1910, the Curragh Golf Club was granted a royal charter and was renamed the Royal Curragh Golf Club. After the Irish Free State was granted independence in 1922, however, the club reverted to the name Curragh Golf Club. In 1981, William Gibson, Commandant of the Club, received confirmation from the Home Office in Westminster that the royal title had never been withdrawn. In May 2011, the state visit by Elizabeth II to the Republic of Ireland, the first royal visit since that of George V in 1911, was seen as popular and marked a new relationship between Britain and Ireland. In 2013, the club voted to restore the 'royal' prefix, and its name reverted to the Royal Curragh Golf Club. [2]
The present course opened in 2007 and was designed by Patrick Merrigan.[ citation needed ] It has a length of 6586 yards and a par of 72.[ citation needed ] The course is built on The Curragh plain.[ citation needed ]

The Curragh is a flat open plain of almost 2,000 hectares of common land in County Kildare. This area is well known for Irish horse breeding and training. The Irish National Stud is located on the edge of Kildare town, beside the Japanese Gardens. Also located here is Pollardstown Fen, the largest fen in Ireland. This area is of particular interest to botanists and ecologists because of the numerous bird species that nest and visit there. There are also many rare plants that grow there.
Newbridge, officially known by its Irish name Droichead Nua, is a town in County Kildare, Ireland. While the nearby Great Connell Priory was founded in the 13th century, the town itself formed from the 18th century onwards, and grew rapidly alongside a military barracks which opened in the early 19th century. Taking on the name Newbridge in the 20th century, the town expanded to support the local catchment, and also as a commuter town for Dublin. Doubling in population during the 20 years between 1991 and 2011, its population of 24,366 in 2022 makes it the second largest town in Kildare and the sixteenth-largest in Ireland.
The Royal Liverpool Golf Club is a golf club in Wirral in Merseyside, England. It was founded in 1869 on what was then the racecourse of the Liverpool Hunt Club. It received the "Royal" designation in 1871 due to the patronage of Prince Arthur the Duke of Connaught, one of Queen Victoria's younger sons. Robert Chambers and George Morris were commissioned to lay out the original course, which was extended to 18 holes in 1871. Harry Colt, one of the world's leading golf course architects, redesigned the course early in the 20th century, and it has since been tweaked periodically, mainly as a response to advances in equipment.

Ballybunion Golf Club is a golf club in County Kerry, Ireland. The club is located south of Ballybunion, on Sandhill Road. Comprising two links courses, Ballybunion was previously ranked at number seven in Golf Digest's "100 Best Courses Outside the USA". While, due to its remote location, the course has not been selected for many top championship events, the club's "Old Course" hosted the Irish Open on the European Tour in 2000.
The Royal Dublin Golf Club, founded in 1885, is Ireland's third oldest golf club. It is a private members' club, with an 18-hole links course on Bull Island, Dublin, Ireland. The championship routing that we recognise today was by designed by Harry Colt in the 1920s. Over a three-year period from 2004 the links was extended under the guidance of golf architect Martin Hawtree.

Luttrellstown Castle, dating from the early 15th century, is located in Clonsilla on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland. It has been owned variously by the eponymous and notorious Luttrell family, by the bookseller Luke White and his descendants Baron Annaly, by the Guinness family, the Primwest Group, and since 2006, by JP McManus, John Magnier and Aidan Brooks. The castle has hosted visits by Queen Victoria in 1844 and 1900, and its media profile was raised when Victoria Adams married David Beckham there on 4 July 1999. The demesne's current owners converted the castle and estate into a 5-star resort.

Golf in Ireland dates to at least the mid-19th century, with the Royal Curragh Golf Club being founded in 1858. The two "oldest governing bodies in world golf", the Golfing Union of Ireland (GUI) and the Irish Ladies Golf Union (ILGU), were formed in 1891 and 1893 respectively. By 2008, the GUI had 166,419 members and the ILGU had 49,822 members, making them the third and seventh largest sports associations by membership base in Ireland. Operating as separate unions for over 120 years, the two entities formed a combined organisation, Golf Ireland, which ratified its first board in early 2021.
Ernest Thomas Jones was an Irish professional golfer. He won the Irish PGA Championship twice and represented Ireland in the 1965 Canada Cup. His biggest individual successes came in the 1961 Cox Moore Tournament and, as a senior, in the 1984 Trusthouse Forte PGA Seniors Championship.
