Rugby union in Austria is a minor but growing sport. The national team is currently ranked 79th in the World Rugby's world rankings, [2] which ranks only the top ninety-five countries.
Traditionally, Austrian rugby has been strongest amongst students, particularly in Vienna. [3] However, it has faced fierce competition from soccer and skiing.
The governing body for Austria is Rugby Österreich, which was founded in 1990, and affiliated to the IRB in 1992.
Like neighbouring Germany, Austrian rugby has a surprisingly long history, dating back to 1900 , [3] but the game's English image meant that its development was hindered by the events of the early 20th Century, particularly the two world wars, and the rise of two major far right movements.
The first documented game of rugby played in Austria took place on 14 April 1912. The sport was being brought to Austria by two Englishmen hoping to expand the sports base. It was over sixty years, however, before rugby union took hold in Austria.
Nonetheless, a 1930 game between two French sides in Vienna drew no less than 10,000 spectators, [3] proving that there was a significant interest at the time.
The post-war period has seen a revival in Austrian rugby, partly due to the large number of foreign military personnel who came to be based there. [3] In 1946, matches were being played by the BTA (British Troops Austria) XV at Vienna and elsewhere. One of their "home" matches in Vienna was against a British combined services Central Mediterranean Forces XV, which featured not only the future television rugby commentator and Hawick RFC player Bill McLaren, but also a Colonel Stan Adkins, who would later play for Coventry RFC and England. The London Irish player Spike Hughes wrote about the surreal world of 1960s Austrian rugby in the foreword to Michael Green's The Art of Coarse Rugby :
Because the journey from Bucharest to Vienna took so long, it hadn't been thought worthwhile to play just one match, and as Hughes admits, many of the Austrians had had to be taken off in the previous two matches. However, the game managed to attract some interest:
The ÖRV was founded in 1990 and joined the International Rugby Board in 1992.
The main international rivalry is with the neighbouring countries of Germany and Hungary. In 1992, Austria played a FIRA match with Hungary in front of 8,000 spectators. [3]
In the early 1990s, former Italian cap, Dr Giancarlo Tizanini was a major driving force. Before his death in 1994, he tried hard to establish a Central European equivalent of the Six Nations between Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia. [3]
Rugby union in Austria has begun to grow in recent years as they appeared in the 2008 European Nations Cup.
Some Austrian club teams compete in the neighbouring German leagues or players from Austria play for the local German team (for example, the Bavarian team, RFC Bad Reichenhall, currently has many players who live in the neighbouring Austrian city of Salzburg).
Rugby union has been a men's medal sport at the modern Summer Olympic Games, being played at four of the first seven competitions. The sport debuted at the 1900 Paris games where the gold medal was won by the host nation. It was subsequently featured at the London games in 1908, the Antwerp games in 1920 and the Paris games in 1924.
The Spain national rugby union team, nicknamed Los Leones, represents the Spanish Rugby Federation in men's international rugby union competitions. The team annually takes part in the European Nations Cup, the highest European rugby championship outside the Six Nations. The national side is ranked 20th in the world.
The Russia national rugby union team, nicknamed Medvedi, represented Russia in men's international rugby union international competitions. The team is administered by the Rugby Union of Russia (RUR). The RUR is considered the official successor union of the Soviet Union by World Rugby and the combined CIS team which played in the early 1990s. Since 1992, the team has played as Russia. Its first test match as Russia was against the Barbarians in Moscow in June 1992 and the country's first test against an official Test nation was against Belgium later that same year.
David Hodges is an American businessman and former professional rugby union player and coach. His current role within rugby is uncertain following his last employer, the Austin Gilgronis, being expelled from the MLR. He was an American rugby union coach of the United States national rugby union team, the Eagles. Hodges is a former professional rugby union player, professional, collegiate American football player, and collegiate American football coach. Hodges was captain of the U.S. national rugby team for 28 matches, a U.S. record that stood until 2013. Since retiring from the international game, Dave has had a long run of bad fortune in the business of rugby. He was let go from Rhino Rugby as the Vice President of Sales, let go from USA Rugby after a woeful 2019 Rugby World Cup as the Men's National Team General Manager, and more recently has found himself out of work after his most recent employer, the Austin Gilgronis, we're expelled from the MLR.
The Malta national rugby union team are governed by the Malta Rugby Football Union (MRFU). Although Malta has yet to qualify for the Rugby World Cup, the island state has made remarkable progression since its first international in 2000.
Rugby union in Kenya is a popular sport, in particular due to the success of the Kenya national rugby sevens team in the rugby sevens format, and tournaments such as the Safari Sevens, which has been growing yearly, and now includes numerous international teams.
Swansea Uplands RFC is a rugby union club based in Upper Killay, Swansea, Wales, who play in the WRU Swalec Leagues. They are currently in Division 2 West A.
The Oxford University Rugby Football Club is the rugby union club of the University of Oxford. The club contests The Varsity Match every year against Cambridge University at Twickenham.
The Serbia national rugby union team is classified as a tier three nation by World Rugby, and has yet to qualify for the Rugby World Cup. They have played over 100 internationals.
The Cyprus national rugby union team is nicknamed ‘’The Mighty Mouflons’’ after a kind of horned sheep which is also the republic's national animal. They have won 28 of their 30 games and hold the world record for the most consecutive international rugby union wins with 24, which was ended on 15 November 2014 as they lost to Latvia. They were controversially disqualified from the knock-out phase of the 2015 Rugby World Cup Qualifiers, as they did not meet the necessary membership criteria according to the International Rugby Board.
The USSR national rugby union team represented the Soviet Union in rugby union until the early 1990s.
The most successful teams in women's international rugby union have been England, France, and New Zealand.
Rugby union in Hong Kong is long established, partly as a result of its being a British colony. Rugby union is one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong. In contrast to the People's Republic of China, it has had a continuous existence dating back over a hundred years, and is most notable for the Hong Kong Sevens tournament, the best known of the rugby sevens tournaments. The top domestic club competition is the HKRFU Premiership.
Rugby union in Croatia is a minor sport. As of August 2011, they are ranked fiftieth in the World Rugby's world rankings.
Rugby union in Hungary is a minor but growing sport.
Rugby union in the Netherlands is a popular sport. The sport is governed by the Rugby Nederland, which organizes the Netherlands national rugby union team.
Rugby union in Poland is a moderately popular sport and currently, the Polish men`s national team are ranked 30th in the world as of 20th November 2022. The Poland women's rugby sevens team won the silver medal at the 2023 European Games behind Great Britain, progressing to the final 2024 Summer Olympic qualification tournament.
David Miller Durie Rollo is a former Scotland international rugby union player. He played as a prop forward. Unusually for a Scotland internationalist, he came from Fife.
“Vienna Celtic Rugby Football Club”, also Vienna Celtic RFC and VCRFC, is Austria's oldest Austrian rugby club, located in Vienna's district of Liesing. The club currently holds the championship in Austria's top men's division. Vienna Celtic RFC has a long-standing tradition of training youth players.
Milton Haig is a New Zealand rugby union coach and former player. He was the head coach of the Georgian national team that annually competes the European Nations Cup.
