Ryanair and unions

The Irish airline Ryanair recognises several pilot unions, while it has more limited recognition of cabin-crew and on ground staff. In 2017, Ryanair reversed its long time anti-union stance and recognized pilot unions for the first time. [1] [2]

Ireland

Ryanair faced down Irish trade unions on multiple occasions. In the 1990s against SIPTU after a strike in Dublin Airport, and in a landmark ruling "Ryanair v. The Labour Court", the court determined Ryanair had a right to operate a non-union company. [2]

In 2022 Ryanair announced a tentative collective agreement with pilots union Fórsa union. [3]

Belgium

In 2011, Belgium cabin-crew members of Ryanair sued in local court, demanding that Ryanair observe Belgian labour laws instead of Irish labour laws, the country of the headquarters.[ citation needed ]

Italy

In August 2018, Ryanair signed its first agreement with Italian pilot union ANPAC. [4]

Overtime bans are a type of strike in which workers refuse to engage in overtime work, being any work that falls outside of contracted hours. They do this to leverage their employer into negotiating various working conditions. Often organised in unions, workers may choose this form of industrial action to bargain for a higher rate of pay, better working conditions or to discourage an employer from making redundancies. Unlike a full strike in which employees are usually in breach of their contract, workers engaging in overtime bans are typically well protected. Employers cannot legally withhold normal wages during an overtime ban if employees are not breaching the terms of their employment contracts by refusing to do overtime work. However, the legalities of overtime bans do vary between countries. Overtime bans are effective where "industries and organisations run on such habitually high levels of overtime or goodwill that overtime bans ... can have a significant and immediate impact upon the availability of a good or service". Historically, unions have at times received criticism on ethical grounds for choosing to enact overtime bans. The literature records the occurrence of such bans from the 1800s and there is documentation of their use in four continents.

This includes regulating the wages, benefits, and duties of the employees and the duties and responsibilities of the employer or employers and often includes rules for a dispute resolution process.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ryanair Flight 4102</span> Aviation accident in 2008

On 10 November 2008, Ryanair Flight 4102 from Frankfurt–Hahn Airport, in Hahn, Rhineland-Palatinate to Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport, in Rome, Italy, suffered multiple bird strikes while landing. Of the 172 people on board, two crew and eight passengers received hospital treatment for minor injuries. The 8-month-old Boeing 737-8AS jet used for the flight had received a massive amount of damage, which led to it being written off. This accident represents the fourth hull loss of a Boeing 737-800.

International Transport Workers Federation v Viking Line ABP (2007) C-438/05 is an EU law case of the European Court of Justice, in which it was held that there is a positive right to strike, but the exercise of that right could infringe a business's freedom of establishment under the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union article 49. Often called The Rosella case or the Viking case, it is relevant to all labour law within the European Union. The decision has been criticised for the Court's inarticulate line of reasoning, and its disregard of fundamental human rights.

Unite the Union, commonly known as Unite, is a British and Irish trade union which was formed on 1 May 2007 by the merger of Amicus and the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU). Along with Unison, Unite is one of the two largest trade unions in the UK, with over 1.2 million members in construction, manufacturing, transport, logistics and other sectors. The general secretary of Unite is Sharon Graham, who was elected on 25 August 2021 with 46,696 votes on a turnout of 124,127, with her term beginning on 26 August 2021.

The Ryanair Pilot Group (RPG) is an unrecognised labor union formed in 2012 by pilots working for the low cost Irish airline, Ryanair. The three founders were Evert Van Zwol, John Goss and Ted Murphy. As of 2013, more than 50% of pilots in Ryanair were registered and represented by the RPG in all categories. By 2020, RPG had de-centralised into nation-based pilot associations.

Fórsa is an Irish trade union for public service staff. With over 80,000 members, it is the largest public service union in Ireland, and second largest trade union in the state. It was created following a ballot of the Public Service Executive Union (PSEU), the Irish Municipal, Public and Civil Trade Union (IMPACT) and the Civil and Public Services Union (CPSU) in November 2017, where the majority of each union voted to amalgamate.

A police union is a trade union for police officers. Police unions formed later than most other occupations, reflecting both a conservative tendency and relatively superior working conditions. The first police unions formed in the United States. Shortly after World War I, the rising cost of living, wage reductions, concerns over amount of rest and growing dissatisfaction among rank and file police officers led to a number of police strikes from 1918-1923 and the formation of police unions globally.
