Johannes C Russ was a coaster that was built in 1921 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin for German owners. In 1942 she was wrecked off Sweden but was salvaged and returned to service. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Flensburg, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Connaught. In 1946, she was allocated to the Soviet Government and renamed Nemirovich Danchenko. She served until 1971, when she was scrapped.

Description

The ship was built in 1921 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin. [1]

The ship was 210 feet 8 inches (64.21 m) long, with a beam of 33 feet 8 inches (10.26 m). She had a depth of 13 feet 4 inches (4.06 m). The ship had a GRT of 998 and a NRT of 545. [2]

The ship was propelled by a triple expansion steam engine, which had cylinders of 15+34 inches (40 cm), 25+14 inches (64 cm) and 41+316 inches (104.6 cm) diameter by 29+12 inches (75 cm) stroke. The engine was built by Stettiner Oderwerke. [2]

History

Johannes C Russ was built for Schiffart-und Assekuranz Gesellschaft GmbH. She was placed under the management of Ernst Russ, Hamburg. Her port of registry was Hamburg and the Code Letters RBVJ were allocated. [2] In 1934, her Code letters were changed to DHNG. [3] On 21 October 1941, Johannes C Russ was wrecked off Umeå, Sweden. She was later salvaged, repaired and returned to service. [1]

Johannes C Russ was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Flensburg. She was passed to the MoWT and renamed Empire Connaught. [1] Her port of registry was changed to London. The Code Letters GKST and United Kingdom Official Number 180704 were allocated. [4] In 1946, Empire Connaught was allocated to the Soviet Government and was renamed Nemirovich Danchenko. She served until she was scrapped in 1971. [1]

In winter 1947 the Soviet steamship Yakut was used in operations to tow the steamer Nemirovich Danchenko due to Nemirovich Danchenko already used mostly own coal during the voyage Panama - Kamchatka and lacked coal in Pacific Ocean to complete this voyage. [5]

On 14 December 1947. The steamship Nemirovich Danchenko was without cargo and alongside the berth number 3 in Nagayev port. The ship loaded the coal in own hopper, the bunkering had place. On 19 December the ship still was alongside in Nagayev port, when two Soviet steamships General Vatutin; ex. Liberty class ship SS Jay Cooke) carrying 3,313 tonnes of Ammonal and TNT and Vyborg carrying 193 tonnes of chemistry substances exploded. Due to exploded ships had explosive cargo Nagayev settlement and port were in fire and partly ruined and other ships in the port including the steamship Nemirovich Danchenko were damaged more or less. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT), renamed Empire Concession. In 1946, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Brazen Head. In 1950, she was sold to Finland and renamed Enso. A further sale in 1959 saw her renamed Hakuni. In 1966, she was sold to Panama and renamed Isla Del Rey. She was scrapped in June 1966.

Theresia L M Russ was a 1,694 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1927 by Neptun AG, Rostock, Germany for Ernst Russ. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine for two years during the Second World War. In 1944, she was sunk by bombing at Gotenhafen, German occupied Poland. The ship was raised and repaired in 1945. She was seized by the Allies at Copenhagen and passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Concrete.

Günther Russ was a 998 GRT coaster that was built in 1921 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condorrat. She was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Kenton. In 1950, she was sold to West Germany and was renamed Günther Russ, serving until 1957 when she was scrapped.

SS <i>I P Suhr</i>

I.P. Suhr was a 1,649 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1926 by Ostseewerft AG, Stettin as Siegmund for German owners. After a sale in 1929 she was renamed Thielbek. A further sale in 1939 saw her renamed Ingrid Traber. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Condover. In 1946, she was passed to the Norwegian Government and renamed Fornes. She was sold into merchant service in 1948 and renamed I.P. Suhr, serving until December 1950 when she capsized and sank.

SS <i>Söderhamn</i>

Söderhamn was a 1,499 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1899 by Helsingørs Jernskib-og Maskinbyggeri A/S, Denmark for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Kiel in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Congham. In 1947, she was returned to her previous owners and renamed Söderhamn. She served until 1958 when she was scrapped in Hamburg, Germany.

Saar was a 1,026 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1937 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin for German owners. She was seized by the Allies at Kolding, Denmark in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Congleton. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union and renamed Donetz (Донец).

Deneb was a 1,080 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1923 as Rhenania by Nüscke & Co, Stettin for German owners. She was sold in 1924 and renamed Marth Halm In 1927, she was sold to Finnish owners and renamed Bore VII. She ran aground in 1936 and was declared a total loss. In 1937, she was sold to Germany, repaired and renamed Götaälv. In 1938 she was sold and renamed Bernhard Schulte. In 1941, she sank off the Lofoten Islands but was salvaged and repaired.

Edenhurst was a cargo ship that was built in 1930 by Furness Shipbuilding Ltd, Haverton Hill-on-Tees for British owners. She was sold in 1937 to Finnish owners and renamed Ilves. In 1939, she was sold to German owners and renamed Glückauf. In 1940 she was sold and renamed Warnow and was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in that year. She was seized by the Allies in Rendsburg in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conleven. Ilse L.-M. Russ was a 1,600 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1926 by Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft, Flensburg. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945 at Kiel, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and renamed Empire Conqueror. In 1946, she was allocated to the Norwegian Government and renamed Ekornes. She was sold into merchant service in 1947 and renamed Elfrida. She served until December 1959 when she sprang a leak and sank off the coast of Norway.

Gisela L M Russ was a 1,175 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Consort. In 1946, she was sold to the Greek Government and renamed Volos and then sold and renamed Marios II in 1948. She served until she sank in 1959 following a boiler explosion.

Dimitry Laptev was a 1,560 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1936 as Heinrich Schmidt by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constable. In 1946, she was transferred to the Soviet Government and renamed Dimitry Laptev. She served until she was scrapped in 1971.

Dollart was a 535 GRT coaster that was built in 1912 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constancy. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Polzeath. In 1951, she was sold to Turkey and renamed Meltem. Further sales saw her renamed Yener 9 in 1956 and Yarasli in 1959. She went missing in the Ionian Sea in January 1961.

Selnes was a 1,593 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1928 as Gemma by Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany for German owners. A sale in 1929 saw her renamed Peter Vith. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constitution. In 1946, she was transferred to Norway and renamed Grannes and then Selnes following a further sale later that year. In 1950, she was involved in a collision in the Thames Estuary and was declared a total loss.

SS <i>Pinnau</i>

Pinnau was a 1,198 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1922 by Nobiskrug Werft GmbH, Rendsburg, Germany for German owners. She was seized by the Allies in May 1945, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Constructor. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Estkon. She served until 1959 when she was scrapped.

Anakriya was a 1,000 GRT cargo ship that was built in 1925 as Riga by Travewerk Gebrüder Goedhart AG, Hamburg, Germany. After a sale in 1934 she was renamed Königsberg. In 1939, she was renamed Stettin. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies at Hamburg, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Conway. In 1946, she was passed to the Soviet Union, initially renamed Stettin, and then renamed Anakriya.

Wilhelm Russ was a 997 GRT coaster that was built in 1921 by Stettiner Oderwerke AG, Stettin, Germany. In 1945, she was seized by the Allies at Eckernförde, passed to the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) and was renamed Empire Cony. In 1947, she was sold into merchant service and renamed Elsie Beth. In 1950, she was sold back to her original managers and renamed Wilhelm Russ. She served until 1958 when she was scrapped.

Admiral Hardy was a 1,929 GRT Hansa A type cargo ship that was built in 1944 by Stettiner Oderwerke, Stettin, Germany as Michael Ferdinand for Hugo Ferdinand Dampschiffs Reederi. She was seized in 1945 as a war prize and taken over by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT) as Empire Farrar. In 1949, she was sold to Hong Kong and renamed Admiral Hardy. She was sold to Norway in 1955. In 1965, she was sold to Panama and renamed Dumai Trader, serving until 1967 when she was scrapped.
