There are many theories that support the importance of nurses approaching the patient holistically and education on this is there to support the goal of holistic nursing. The important skill to be used in holistic nursing would be communicating skills with patients and other practitioners. This emphasizes that patients being treated would be treated not only in their body but also their mind and spirit.. Holistic nursing is a nursing speciality concerning the integration of one's mind,body,and spirit with his or her environment. This speciality has a theoretical basis in a few grand nursing theories,most notably the science of unitary human beings,as published by Martha E. Rogers in An Introduction to the Theoretical Basis of Nursing,and the mid-range theory Empowered Holistic Nursing Education,as published by Dr. Katie Love. Holistic nursing has gained recognition by the American Nurses Association (ANA) as a nursing specialty with a defined scope of practice and standards. Holistic nursing focuses on the mind,body,and spirit working together as a whole and how spiritual awareness in nursing can help heal illness. Holistic medicine focuses on maintaining optimum well-being and preventing rather than just treating disease.

Earlier positions include distinguished professor and dean of the BouvéCollege of Health Sciences at Northeastern University and dean of the College of Nursing at New York University. Mary Goretti Boland,MSN,RN,FAAN is a Pediatric Nurse and Doctor of Public Health,and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is nationally known for her work developing innovative healthcare programs for underserved children with HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases. In 1978,Boland staffed an innovative mobile health screening van for the Ironbound Community Health Project in Newark,New Jersey. She became director of the AIDS program at Children's Hospital of New Jersey and served as the coordinator for the Children's AIDS program (CHAP) at United Hospitals Medical Center in Newark. She served on the AIDS Advisory Committee in New Jersey and the National AIDS Advisory Committee. The United States Department of Health and Human Services gave her an award for her work in pediatric AIDS/HIV treatment.
Julie G. Pilitsis was an American neurosurgeon and academic administrator. She is the chair of the neurosurgery department at the University of Arizona College of Medicine –Tucson. Pilitsis served as the dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University from 2022 to 2023.
