The first Negro National League (NNL) was one of the several Negro leagues that were established during the period in the United States when organized baseball was segregated. The league was formed in 1920 with former player Rube Foster as its president.
Cristóbal Torriente was a Cuban professional baseball player who played as an outfielder in Negro league baseball with multiple teams. He played from 1912 to 1932 and was primarily a pull hitter,though he could hit with power to all fields. He had a stocky and slightly bowlegged build,but was known for deceptive power and a strong,accurate arm from center field. Indianapolis ABC's manager C.I. Taylor stated,"If I see Torriente walking up the other side of the street,I would say,'There walks a ballclub.'" Torriente was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Louis Santop Loftin was an American baseball catcher in the Negro leagues. He became "one of the earliest superstars" and "black baseball's first legitimate home-run slugger" (Riley),and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. Some sources show a birth year of 1890,but his Navy records and Baseball Hall of Fame records support the earlier date.
Alejandro Oms Cosme was a Cuban center fielder in Negro league baseball and Latin American baseball,most notably with the Cuban Stars (East). Born in Santa Clara,Las Villas,he died at age 50 in Havana.
William P. "Plunk" Drake was a Negro league baseball pitcher.
The Negro Southern League (NSL) was one of the several Negro baseball leagues created during the time organized baseball was segregated. The NSL was organized as a minor league in 1920 and lasted until 1936. It was considered a major league for the 1932 season and it was also the only organized league to finish its full schedule that season. Prior to the season,several established teams joined the NSL,mainly from the collapsed Negro National League.
The Montgomery Grey Sox were a Negro Southern League (NSL) baseball team based in Montgomery,Alabama. While the NSL was regarded as a minor league throughout most of its existence,with the collapse of the first Negro National League in 1931,the league is considered a major league for 1932.
Bernardo Baró was a Cuban professional baseball player in the Negro leagues and the Cuban League. Primarily an outfielder,he also played some games as a pitcher or an infielder. He played for the Cuban Stars (West) and the Cuban Stars (East) in the Negro leagues and Almendares,San Francisco Park and Habana in the Cuban League from 1915 to 1929.
Jerry Charles Benjamin was an American Negro league baseball center fielder who played from 1931 to 1948. He played for the Knoxville Giants,Memphis Red Sox,Indianapolis ABCs/Detroit Stars,Birmingham Black Barons,Homestead Grays,Newark Eagles,and New York Cubans. Benjamin was part of the famous Grays that won nine pennants in eleven years,for which Benjamin was part of eight Negro National League pennant teams along with two Negro World Series championships in four Series appearances. In those contests,he batted .220 with five total runs batted in (RBI) while stealing five bases in eighteen hits. A three-time East-West All-Star,he had a .372 batting average in 1943. He led the league in a variety of categories over his sixteen season career. He led the league in triples twice. In 1937,he led the league in walks (thirty),stolen bases (thirteen),games (52). He led the league in stolen bases (thirteen) in 1930. He led the league in at-bats four times. In center field,he led the league six times in games played,twice in putouts,three times in assists,and two times each in errors committed and double plays.
George Henry "Tank" Carr was an American first baseman and outfielder with the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro baseball leagues from 1920 to 1922.
Valentín Dreke was a Cuban baseball outfielder in the Negro leagues. He played from 1919 to 1927,doing so with the Cuban Stars (East) and Cuban Stars (West). He also played winter ball with the famed Almendares team on three occasions. He led the Negro National League in batting average in 1924,hitting .389 in 46 games played. In his eight years of Negro league ball,he batted at least .296 in each season. He died of tuberculosis in 1929. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945.
Pelayo Chacón Cortina was a Cuban professional baseball shortstop and manager in the Cuban League and Negro leagues. He spent most of his American playing career with the Cuban Stars (East),which he also managed from 1923 to 1927.
Bienvenido Jiménez was a Cuban baseball second baseman in the Cuban League and Negro leagues. He played from 1912 to 1929 with several clubs,including Habana,the Cuban Stars (West),and the Cuban Stars (East). Jiménez was nicknamed "Hooks","Gambeta",and "Pata Joroba". He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951.
Isidro FabréFontrodona was a Cuban baseball pitcher in the Negro leagues. He played from 1918 to 1939,mostly with the Cuban Stars (East). Fabréwas elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956.
Ramón "El Profesor" Bragaña Palacios was a Cuban baseball pitcher and outfielder in the Negro leagues and the Mexican League.
