History and profile

Samtiden was founded by Jørgen Brunchorst and Gerhard Gran in 1890. [1] [2] The magazine's first publisher was John Griegs forlag (Bergen), and from 1900 Aschehoug (Oslo). [3]

Gran was the magazine's editor from 1892 to 1925. As of 2002 Thomas Hylland Eriksen was the editor-in-chief of the magazine. [4] Cathrine Sandnes was editor-in-chief since 2006 to 2014. [1]

Samtiden is a member of the Eurozine network. [5]

Edvard Bull was a Norwegian historian and politician for the Labour Party. He took the doctorate in 1912 and became a professor at the University of Kristiania in 1917, and is known for writings on a broad range of subjects. In addition to his academic work, he is known for his work on Norsk biografisk leksikon. His Marxist leanings inspired him to take up a parallel political career, in the Labour Party. Situated on the radical wing in the 1910s, he was among the architects as the Labour Party denounced the Twenty-one Conditions in 1923 and reunited with the social democrats in 1927. He was the deputy party leader from 1923 to 1932, and served as Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs in Hornsrud's short-lived cabinet in 1928.

Norsk Riksmålsordbok is a Norwegian dictionary for the unofficial written language form Riksmål. The work was initiated by Riksmaalsvernet around 1920. Its first edition was completed in 1957, and was printed in four volumes. Two extra volumes were issued in 1995. Trond Berg Eriksen is a Norwegian historian of ideas, non-fiction writer and magazine editor. He was born in Øvre Eiker in Buskerud. His thesis, from 1975, was on the ethics of Aristoteles. He was appointed professor at the University of Oslo from 1990. He edited the magazine Samtiden from 1989 to 1993, and has published a number of books.

In 2016 in Norway, the reigning monarch is King Harald V of Norway. The Prime Minister of Norway is Erna Solberg, who has been Prime Minister since October 2013. The president of the Storting is Olemic Thommessen, who has also been in power since October 2013. Norway will be hosting the 2016 Winter Youth Olympics in Lillehammer in 2016. Lillehammer was previously the host of the 1994 Winter Olympics. Norway will be hosting local or international music festivals for various genres of music including metal, opera, jazz and Church music.
