History

People's Horse Railway Company (1879-1894)

The San Jose Railroads has its origins in the founding of the People's Horse Railway Co. in 1879 "to acquire control of several horse railroads". It subsequently acquired the First Street Railroad, Market Street & Willow Glen Railroad, and North Side Horse Railroad Co. in 1881, 1882, and 1882 respectively. The only other street railway to operate in San Jose during this time was the South East Side Horse Railroad Co. which opened in 1877 and was merged the same year into the North Side Horse Railroad Co. This formed a duopoly with the rival San Jose and Santa Clara County Railway which was the original operator of horsecar service in San Jose dating back to 1868. The San Jose Railroad Company mainly operated routes branching off of first street, while the San Jose and Santa Clara County Railroad mainly operated routes branching off of Santa Clara street.

San Jose Railroad Company (1894-1912)

In 1894, the People's Horse Railway Co. changed its name to the San Jose Railroad Company. A third street railway, the Alum Rock Railway Co., also operated service to Alum Rock Park from 1896 until 1905 when it was taken over by the San Jose and Santa Clara County Railway.

San Jose Railroads (1912-1938)

In 1912, the San Jose and Santa Clara County Railway was incorporated into the San Jose Railroad Company, forming the San Jose Railroads, a trolley monopoly, a few years after the San Jose Railroads was itself acquired by Southern Pacific [3] [4] :53 This arrangement was sustained until electric trolley service in San Jose ended April 10, 1938. [1]

Routes

Electric trolleys

As a result of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, many original horsecar routes were damaged and rebuilt as electric trolleys on standard gauge tracks. A few lines, notably on Hobson street and Monterey Road south of Alma street, were never upgraded from narrow gauge tracks and were soon replaced by buses.

During the 1920s, San Jose was served by many electric trolley routes. On May 1, 1921, a major restructuring of trolley routes was implemented. This created routes 1 to 9, with lines 1-3 operating as a trunk on Santa Clara street with branches, 4 being a shuttle in Hanchett Park, 5 being a shuttle in Santa Clara, 6/7/9 operating on first street as a trunk with branches, and 8 operating on Delmas, San Fernando, and Julian streets. Local service within San Jose was also provided on the Bascome and Naglee lines of the Peninsular Railway. [4] :85 When the Peninsular Railway ended service in 1934, the Bascome local route and Naglee local route were transferred to San Jose Railroads. [5]

Bus Lines

San Jose Railroads ran some bus services, mostly in its later years to substitute previously abandoned trolley service. In 1921, there were two such bus routes numbered 10 and 11, running on Hobson street and Monterey Road south of Alma street. [4] :85 In 1939 San Jose Railroads was merged into San Jose City Lines, a subsidiary of National City Lines. [3] Notably, this was an whole year after the trolley routes stopped operating, so by then San Jose Railroads may have been exclusively operating bus service, assuming it gradually abandoned streetcar routes and converted them to buses.

Operations

The San Jose Railroads operated out of two trolley divisions, the Alameda Carbarn at the northern side of Alameda and Julian streets, and the East Santa Clara Street Carbarn on the northeastern corner of Santa Clara street and 27th streets. [4] :145 Both carbarns had direct mainline rail access, and the San Jose Railroads Headquarters were in a building adjacent to the Alameda Carbarn.

San Jose Railroads car 73, 124 & 143

Streetcars number 73, 124, and 143 are the only known surviving San Jose Railroads streetcars. Number 73 is kept at the VTA Guadalupe division along with VTA light rail trains. It is brought out for a seasonal heritage service at the downtown transit mall, along with a few other streetcars operated by the California Trolley & Railroad Corporation. [2] Streetcar number 124 is kept at the trolley barn in San Jose's History Park. It is often operated on weekends.

Birney car number 143 is also kept at the History San Jose trolley barn. However it was originally owned and operated by the Fresno Traction Company. It was recovered from a farm field near Fresno in the 1980s. After a four year restoration and reconstruction, it is now operational and also run on weekends.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Key System</span> Former local electric railway service in the East Bay

The Key System was a privately owned company that provided mass transit in the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont, San Leandro, Richmond, Albany, and El Cerrito in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area from 1903 until 1960, when it was sold to a newly formed public agency, AC Transit. The Key System consisted of local streetcar and bus lines in the East Bay, and commuter rail and bus lines connecting the East Bay to San Francisco by a ferry pier on San Francisco Bay, later via the lower deck of the Bay Bridge. At its height during the 1940s, the Key System had over 66 miles (106 km) of track. The local streetcars were discontinued in 1948 and the commuter trains to San Francisco were discontinued in 1958. The Key System's territory is today served by BART and AC Transit bus service.

New York State Railways was a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad that controlled several large city streetcar and electric interurban systems in upstate New York. It included the city transit lines in Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Oneida and Rome, plus various interurban lines connecting those cities. New York State Railways also held a 50% interest in the Schenectady Railway Company, but it remained a separate independent operation. The New York Central took control of the Rochester Railway Company, the Rochester and Eastern Rapid Railway and the Rochester and Sodus Bay Railway in 1905, and the Mohawk Valley Company was formed by the railroad to manage these new acquisitions. New York State Railways was formed in 1909 when the properties controlled by the Mohawk Valley Company were merged. In 1912 it added the Rochester and Suburban Railway, the Syracuse Rapid Transit Railway, the Oneida Railway, and the Utica and Mohawk Valley Railway. The New York Central Railroad was interested in acquiring these lines in an effort to control the competition and to gain control of the lucrative electric utility companies that were behind many of these streetcar and interurban railways. Ridership across the system dropped through the 1920s as operating costs continued to rise, coupled with competition from better highways and private automobile use. New York Central sold New York State Railways in 1928 to a consortium led by investor E. L. Phillips, who was looking to gain control of the upstate utilities. Phillips sold his stake to Associated Gas & Electric in 1929, and the new owners allowed the railway bonds to default. New York State Railways entered receivership on December 30, 1929. The company emerged from receivership in 1934, and local operations were sold off to new private operators between 1938 and 1948.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Streetcars in Cincinnati</span>

Streetcars operated by the Cincinnati Street Railway were the main form of public transportation in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century. The first electric streetcars began operation in 1889, and at its maximum, the streetcar system had 222 miles (357 km) of track and carried more than 100 million passengers per year. A very unusual feature of the system was that cars on some of its routes traveled via inclined railways to serve areas on hills near downtown. With the advent of inexpensive automobiles and improved roads, transit ridership declined in the 20th century and the streetcar system closed in 1951. Construction of a new streetcar system, now known as the Connector, began in 2012. Consisting initially of a single route, the new system opened on September 9, 2016.

Prior to 1959, Montreal, Quebec, Canada had an extensive streetcar system. The streetcar network had its beginnings with the horsecar era of the Montreal City Passenger Railway in 1861. The initial line was along Rue Notre Dame from Rue du Havre to Rue McGill.

The Rochester Railway Company operated a streetcar transit system throughout the city of Rochester from 1890 until its acquisition by Rochester Transit Corp. in 1938. Formed by a group of Pittsburgh investors, the Rochester Railway Company purchased the Rochester City & Brighton Railroad in 1890, followed by a lease of the Rochester Electric Railway in 1894. The Rochester and Suburban Railway was leased in 1905, extending the system's reach to Irondequoit and Sea Breeze. Rochester Railways was acquired by the Mohawk Valley Company, a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad set up to take control of electric railways in its territory. In 1909 the holdings of the Mohawk Valley Company were consolidated as the New York State Railways.
