Sandhya Srikant Visweswariah is a scientist and academic at the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore,India. She is currently the Chairperson of the Department of Molecular Reproduction,Development and Genetics [1] and the Co-chair of the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering, [2] Indian Institute of Science. She additionally holds the position of Adjunct Professor,Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, [3] University of Bergen, [4] Norway. Her research involves the investigation of the mechanism of signal transduction via cyclic nucleotides,phosphodiesterases and novel cyclases in bacteria. [5] Most recently,she was awarded a Bill and Melinda Gates Grand Challenges Explorations Grant [6] for her proposal entitled "A Small Animal Model of ETEC-Mediated Diarrhea". [7] [8]
Visweswariah completed her Bachelor of Science in 1977 at Osmania University, [9] Hyderabad,majoring in Botany,Chemistry and Zoology. She then obtained a Master of Science degree in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology,Kanpur in 1980. She proceeded to enrol at the PhD programme at the Department of Biochemistry, [10] Indian Institute of Science and was awarded her doctorate in 1987. [11]
Visweswariah started her career as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Astra Research Centre,Bangalore in 1987-1988. After a year at the Astra Research Centre,she was promoted to a scientist position at the same organization,where she stayed on until 1993. In 1993,she was appointed as Assistant Professor at the Department of Molecular Reproduction,Development and Genetics, [12] Indian Institute of Science,where she has held a position since,being promoted to Associate Professor in 1995 and then to Professor in 2005. [13] She is currently the Chairperson of the Department of Molecular Reproduction,Development and Genetics, [12] Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore and Co-chair of the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering, [2] Indian Institute of Science. Over the course of 23 years as faculty at the Indian Institute of Science,Visweswariah has mentored more than 25 PhD students. [14]
Visweswariah is a fellow of the Indian National Science Academy [15] and the Indian Academy of Sciences:Third World Organisation for women in science. [16] She is a life member of the Society of Biological Chemists (India), [17] [18] Indian Society of Cell Biology [19] (1995–present) and the Society of Research in Reproduction,India (1994–present). Additionally,she is a member of Guha Research Council,India (1997–present),the Alliance for Cell Signalling [20] (1997–present),the TB Structural Genomics Consortium,the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology [21] (ASBMB),and the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). She serves as the Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Receptors and Signal Transduction,Tuberculosis, [23] Physiology Reports, [24] FEMS Microbiological Letters [25] and PeerJ and an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Cellular Endocrinology. [26]
Visweswariah has 95 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 5 book chapters to her credit,with a total citation count of over 1600 and an h-index of 25. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public,deemed,research university for higher education and research in science,engineering,design,and management. It is located in the southern Indian city of Bangalore,Karnataka. The institute was established in 1909 with active support from Jamsetji Tata and thus is also locally known as the Tata Institute. Bikramjit Basu is currently a full professor at Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore,specializing in Engineering Ceramics and Biomaterials Science. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology,the highest science award in India,for the year 2013 in engineering science category. The prize was awarded for his "outstanding contributions encompassing theory and experiments to significantly expand our understanding of the in vitro cell functionality modulation on engineered bio-materials using electric field simulation approach". With a team of clinicians and entrepreneurs,he is actively involved in translating his research into implantable biomedical devices for orthopedic and dental restorative applications and currently leading a center of Excellence at IISc,Bangalore. In 2015,he received the National Bioscience award. Besides,Prof. Basu is also involved in development of Zirconum diboride based UHTCs.
Avadhesha Surolia is a glycobiologist at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc),Bangalore. He was born in Kishangarh,Rajasthan,India. Presently,he is an honorary professor at the Molecular Biophysics Unit,IISc and holds the Bhatnagar fellowship of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He is known for his work on lectin structure and interactions,orientation and dynamics of cell surface carbohydrate receptors and protein folding,diabetes,antimalarials and anti-cancer agents based on curcumin,flavonoids,etc. In addition,neuropathic pain,neurodegenerative disorders and the link between immunity and obsessive–compulsive disorder are areas of his current interest
Usha Vijayraghavan is an Indian molecular biologist. She is on the faculty of the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology,at the Indian Institute of Science. Her major research interests are Molecular Genetics,Plant Development.
V. Nagaraja is a Professor,Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology,Indian Institute of Science,Bengaluru. He had received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in the year 1973 and 1975 from the Bangalore University. He completed his Ph.D. in 1981 from Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology at IISc and the work on mycobacteriophage I3 and role of DNA gyrase in mycobacteria set the stage for his later work when he joined the Institute as an assistant professor in 1989. After his PhD in 1981,he was a research associate at Biozentrum,University of Basel,Switzerland (1981–85) and at Department of Biology,University of Rochester,USA(1985–89). He joined in 1989 as an assistant professor,in Centre for Genetic Engineering,IISc and was involved in setting up of the department. He became an associate professor in 1995 at Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology,IISc,Professor in 2000 and served as professor and chairman of the department (2008–2013). He has been appointed president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments with effect from 14 October 2015.
Kalappa Muniyappa is an Indian molecular biologist and geneticist,known for his researches on the chromatization of DNA and gene targeting. He is a professor and chairman of the department of biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy,Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences,India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 1995,for his contributions to biological sciences.
Kanakaraj Sekar is an Indian bioinformatician and a professor at the Department of Computational and Data Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Known for his studies in the field of bioinformatics,Sekar heads the Laboratory for Structural Biology and Bio-computing at IISc. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2004.

Utpal Shashikant Tatu is an Indian molecular biologist,biochemist and a professor and Chairman of the department of biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his research on infectious disease such as malaria and other neglected tropical diseases of global relevance. He is one of the first proponents of "One Health" concept to control infectious disease outbreaks. Tatu is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2008. Tatu is a proponent of the One Health approach. The 'One Health' approach advocates designing and implementing strategies,policies and carrying out scientific research which involves collaboration between multiple sectors that will lead to major public health outcomes.

He has been studying DNA damage responses in mammalian cells,and mechanisms underlying chromosome instability genetic diseases and cancer. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,for his contributions to biosciences,in 2015. In 2018,Nagaraju received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Biological Sciences from CSIR. This award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to Science and Technology,and is considered one of the highest awards for science in India.
Amit Singh is an Indian microbiologist and an associate professor at the department of microbiology and cell biology of the Indian Institute of Science. A Wellcome-DBT Senior Fellow,Singh is known for his studies on the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development for 2017/18. He was awarded with the prestigious CSIR- Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award on 2021 for his phenomenal contributions in bio-scientific research. He received the 2021 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Biological Science.
Kim Orth is a microbiologist and biochemist. She is the Earl A. Forsythe chair in biomedical science and professor of molecular biology and biochemistry at UT Southwestern. She is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis.
