The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is a public,deemed,research university for higher education and research in science,engineering,design,and management. It is located in the southern Indian city of Bangalore,Karnataka. The institute was established in 1909 with active support from Jamsetji Tata and thus is also locally known as the Tata Institute. It was granted a deemed university status in 1958 and recognized as an Institute of Eminence in 2018.
The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) is a learned society that was founded on December 26,1906,at a meeting organized by John Jacob Abel. The roots of the society were in the American Physiological Society,which had been formed some 20 years earlier. ASBMB is the US member of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Education and Research Network (ERNET) is an autonomous scientific society of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology,Government of India. ERNET has made a significant contribution to the emergence of networking in the country. It practically brought the Internet to India and has built up national capabilities in the area of net-working,especially in protocol software engineering. It is the first internet service in india. It has not only succeeded in building a large network that provides various facilities to the intellectual segment of Indian society—the research and education community,it has over the years become a trendsetter in the field of networking.
Manchanahalli Rangaswamy Satyanarayana Rao was an Indian scientist. He was awarded the fourth-highest civilian award,the Padma Shri,for Science and Engineering in 2010. From 2003 to 2013 he was president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) in Bangalore,India.
Bikramjit Basu is currently a full professor at Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore,specializing in Engineering Ceramics and Biomaterials Science. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology,the highest science award in India,for the year 2013 in engineering science category. The prize was awarded for his "outstanding contributions encompassing theory and experiments to significantly expand our understanding of the in vitro cell functionality modulation on engineered bio-materials using electric field simulation approach". With a team of clinicians and entrepreneurs,he is actively involved in translating his research into implantable biomedical devices for orthopedic and dental restorative applications and currently leading a center of Excellence at IISc,Bangalore. In 2015,he received the National Bioscience award. Besides,Prof. Basu is also involved in development of Zirconum diboride based UHTCs.
Avadhesha Surolia is a glycobiologist at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc),Bangalore. He was born in Kishangarh,Rajasthan,India. Presently,he is an honorary professor at the Molecular Biophysics Unit,IISc and holds the Bhatnagar fellowship of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). He is known for his work on lectin structure and interactions,orientation and dynamics of cell surface carbohydrate receptors and protein folding,diabetes,antimalarials and anti-cancer agents based on curcumin,flavonoids,etc. In addition,neuropathic pain,neurodegenerative disorders and the link between immunity and obsessive–compulsive disorder are areas of his current interest
Usha Vijayraghavan is an Indian molecular biologist. She is on the faculty of the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology,at the Indian Institute of Science. Her major research interests are Molecular Genetics,Plant Development.
V. Nagaraja is a Professor,Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology,Indian Institute of Science,Bengaluru. He had received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in the year 1973 and 1975 from the Bangalore University. He completed his Ph.D. in 1981 from Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology at IISc and the work on mycobacteriophage I3 and role of DNA gyrase in mycobacteria set the stage for his later work when he joined the Institute as an assistant professor in 1989. After his PhD in 1981,he was a research associate at Biozentrum,University of Basel,Switzerland (1981–85) and at Department of Biology,University of Rochester,USA(1985–89). He joined in 1989 as an assistant professor,in Centre for Genetic Engineering,IISc and was involved in setting up of the department. He became an associate professor in 1995 at Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology,IISc,Professor in 2000 and served as professor and chairman of the department (2008–2013). He has been appointed president of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) by the Cabinet Committee on Appointments with effect from 14 October 2015.
Kalappa Muniyappa is an Indian molecular biologist and geneticist,known for his researches on the chromatization of DNA and gene targeting. He is a professor and chairman of the department of biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy,Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences,India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research,the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research,awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology,one of the highest Indian science awards,in 1995,for his contributions to biological sciences.
Kanakaraj Sekar is an Indian bioinformatician and a professor at the Department of Computational and Data Sciences of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Known for his studies in the field of bioinformatics,Sekar heads the Laboratory for Structural Biology and Bio-computing at IISc. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2004.
Saumitra Das is an Indian microbiologist and a professor at the Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology of the Indian Institute of Science. Known for his studies in the fields of molecular virology and molecular biology,Das is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies namely,the Indian Academy of Sciences,the National Academy of Sciences,India and the Indian National Science Academy. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2005.

Known for his studies on the therapeutics of Glioblastoma,Somasunderam is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies namely,the National Academy of Sciences,India,the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2006.
Utpal Shashikant Tatu is an Indian molecular biologist,biochemist and a professor and Chairman of the department of biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his research on infectious disease such as malaria and other neglected tropical diseases of global relevance. He is one of the first proponents of "One Health" concept to control infectious disease outbreaks. Tatu is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences in 2008. Tatu is a proponent of the One Health approach. The 'One Health' approach advocates designing and implementing strategies,policies and carrying out scientific research which involves collaboration between multiple sectors that will lead to major public health outcomes.

Ashok M. Raichur is an Indian materials scientist,nanotechnologist and a professor at the Department of Materials Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore. Known for his studies on the use of nanotechnology for biomedical and environmental applications,Raichur is a former Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and a life member of the National Academy of Sciences,India. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences,in 2009.
Professor Maneesha Inamdar is a stem cell and developmental biologist conducting research at Bangalore,India. She is presently Director of inStem,India’s first stem cell institute. She is on deputation from the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR),Bangalore. She is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy and a J C Bose National Fellow.
Patrick D'Silva is an Indian cell biologist,biochemist,and an associate professor at the Molecular Chaperone Lab of the Indian Institute of Science. He is known for his medical discoveries related to neurodegenerative diseases and cancer biology. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,one of the highest Indian science awards,for his contributions to biosciences,in 2014.
Ganesh Nagaraju is an Indian biochemist,geneticist,cancer biologist and a full professor at the Department of Biochemistry of the Indian Institute of Science. He has been studying DNA damage responses in mammalian cells,and mechanisms underlying chromosome instability genetic diseases and cancer. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development,for his contributions to biosciences,in 2015. In 2018,Nagaraju received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Biological Sciences from CSIR. This award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to Science and Technology,and is considered one of the highest awards for science in India.
Amit Singh is an Indian microbiologist and an associate professor at the department of microbiology and cell biology of the Indian Institute of Science. A Wellcome-DBT Senior Fellow,Singh is known for his studies on the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development for 2017/18. He was awarded with the prestigious CSIR- Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award on 2021 for his phenomenal contributions in bio-scientific research. He received the 2021 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology in Biological Science.
Kim Orth is a microbiologist and biochemist. She is the Earl A. Forsythe chair in biomedical science and professor of molecular biology and biochemistry at UT Southwestern. She is a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. Her research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis.
