The Sanford Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in Florida. The line runs along CSX's A Line from St. Johns (near Jacksonville) south through Palatka to DeLand. At its north end it continues south from the Jacksonville Terminal Subdivision on the A Line and at its south end it continues south as the Central Florida Rail Corridor. [1]

Prior to 2011, the Sanford Subdivision continued south from DeLand along the A Line to Auburndale. [2] In 2011, the Florida Department of Transportation bought the line between DeLand and Poinciana and operates the SunRail commuter rail service over that segment. The remaining line south of Poinciana was annexed to CSX's Carters Subdivision after the sale.

CSX still runs local freight on the Sanford Subdivision and on the Central Florida Rail Corridor though through freight trains have since been shifted to the S Line. [3] All three of Amtrak's Florida trains (the Silver Meteor, Silver Star, and the Auto Train) also run the line round-trip daily.

History

The Sanford Subdivision today operates on tracks that were historically part of the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway. That railroad became part the Plant System and later the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Through various mergers, it ended up under the ownership of CSX.

The Silver Meteor is a passenger train operated by Amtrak between New York City and Miami, Florida. Introduced in 1939 as the first diesel-powered streamliner between New York and Florida, it was the flagship train of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad and one of its flagship trains of its successor, the Seaboard Coast Line. It was handed to Amtrak when it took over intercity rail service in 1971.

The Silver Star is a 1,522-mile (2,449 km) passenger train route in the Silver Service brand operated by Amtrak, running from New York City south to Miami, Florida via the Northeast Corridor to Washington, D.C., then via Richmond, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Jacksonville, Florida; Orlando, Florida; and Tampa, Florida.

Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad Historic railroad system

The Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad was the final name of a system of railroads throughout Florida, becoming part of the Seaboard Air Line Railway in 1900. The system, including some of the first railroads in Florida, stretched from Jacksonville west through Tallahassee and south to Tampa. Much of the FC&P network is still in service under the ownership of CSX Transportation.

The Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway was a railroad and steamboat network in Florida, USA at the end of the 19th century. Most of its lines became part of the Plant System in 1899 and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902. The line remains in service today with a vast majority of it now being CSX Transportation's Sanford Subdivision.

SunRail

SunRail is a commuter rail system in the Greater Orlando, Florida, area. Service began on May 1, 2014. The system comprises 16 stations along a former CSX Transportation line connecting Volusia County and Osceola County through Downtown Orlando. The SunRail system is financed by the state and federal governments and the counties it serves. SunRail is Florida's second commuter rail system after South Florida's Tri-Rail.

Florida Southern Railway Historic railroad in Florida

The Florida Southern Railway was a railroad that operated in Florida in the late 1800s. It was one of Florida's three notable narrow gauge railway when it was built along with the South Florida Railroad and the Orange Belt Railway. The Florida Southern was originally chartered to run from Lake City south through central Florida to Charlotte Harbor. However, with the influence of Henry B. Plant, it operated with two discontinuous segments that would be part of the Plant System, which would later become part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad.

Orange Belt Railway

The Orange Belt Railway was a 3 ft narrow gauge railroad established in 1885 by Russian exile Peter Demens in Florida. It was one of the longest narrow gauge railroads in the United States at the time of its completion in 1888, with a mainline 152 miles (245 km) in length between Sanford and St. Petersburg. It carried citrus, vegetables, and passengers; and it interchanged with two standard gauge lines: the Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway at Lake Monroe, and the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad at Lacoochee.

Seaboard–All Florida Railway

The Seaboard–All Florida Railway was a subsidiary of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad that oversaw two major extensions of the system in the early 1920s to southern Florida on each coast during the land boom. One line extended the Seaboard's tracks on the east coast from West Palm Beach down to Miami, while the other extension on the west coast extended the tracks from Fort Ogden south to Fort Myers and Naples, with branches from Fort Myers to LaBelle and Punta Rassa. These two extensions were heavily championed by Seaboard president S. Davies Warfield, and were constructed by Foley Brothers railroad contractors. Both extensions also allowed the Seaboard to better compete with the Florida East Coast Railway and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, who already served the lower east and west coasts of Florida respectively.

Auburndale Subdivision CSX railroad line in Florida

The Auburndale Subdivision is a rail line in southern Central Florida owned and operated by CSX Transportation. It runs along CSX’s SX Line from Auburndale south to Sebring before turning southeast to Okeechobee and then toward West Palm Beach. The Auburndale Subdivision ends near North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport, where it continues southeast to West Palm Beach as the Miami Subdivision. The line connects with CSX’s A Line in Auburndale and connects with shortlines Florida Midland Railroad and South Central Florida Express along its route.

The Miami Subdivision is a short CSX rail line operating just northwest of West Palm Beach, Florida. The line officially runs from a point near the North Palm Beach County General Aviation Airport southeast through Riviera Beach to Mangonia Park, Florida. At the northwest end, the line is a continuation of the Auburndale Subdivision, and at the southeast end, it continues as the state-owned South Florida Rail Corridor. The South Florida Rail Corridor was part of the Miami Subdivision prior to 1988, when CSX sold that segment of the line to the Florida Department of Transportation for $264 million to support the Tri-Rail commuter service.

Carters Subdivision CSX railroad line in Florida

CSX Transportation's Carters Subdivision is a segment of CSX's A Line running from Poinciana southwest to Lakeland. The Carters Subdivision ends just west of Downtown Lakeland at Lakeland Junction, where it continues west as the Lakeland Subdivision and connects to the Vitis Subdivision.

The Jacksonville Terminal Subdivision is a group of railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in and around Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Terminal Subdivision includes the S Line, which runs from Jacksonville at Beaver Street near Moncrief Yard west to Baldwin Junction, for a total of 17.8 miles. At the south end it continues south as the Wildwood Subdivision and west as the Florida Gulf & Atlantic Railroad. The A Line runs from just north of Jacksonville Amtrak Station south though Moncrief Yard to St. Johns, for a total of 13.0 miles. At its north end, the A Line continues south from the Nahunta Subdivision and at its south end it continues south as the Sanford Subdivision.

Lakeland Subdivision CSX railroad line in Florida

The Lakeland Subdivision is a CSX Transportation rail line in Florida. It runs along CSX's A Line from just west of Lakeland and heads west through Plant City to the community of Mango in Hillsborough County, just east of Tampa.

The Wildwood Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in Florida. It runs along CSX's S Line from Baldwin south to Zephyrhills via Ocala and Wildwood for a total of 155.7 miles. The S Line is CSX's designation for the line that was the Seaboard Air Line Railroad main line from 1903 to 1967.

Yeoman Subdivision CSX railroad line in Florida

The Yeoman Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in Florida. It runs along CSX’s S Line from Zephyrhills south to just east of Tampa via Plant City for a total of 31.2 miles.

The Columbia Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in South Carolina and Georgia. The line runs along CSX's S Line from Columbia, South Carolina, to Savannah, Georgia, for a total of 137.9 miles. At its north end it continues south from the Hamlet Subdivision and at its south end it continues south as the Savannah Subdivision of the Jacksonville Division.

The Tampa and Thonotosassa Railroad was a 13-mile railroad line running from Tampa, Florida northeast to Thonotosassa. The line began operation in 1893 and began at a junction with the South Florida Railroad in Tampa. The line had a station in Thonotosassa. The line was bought out by the Plant System in 1901 which was then sold to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1902.
