The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors is the board of supervisors governing Santa Clara County, California. It is made of elected representatives from each of the county's five districts. [2] As a result of the 2022 elections, members of the Democratic Party hold all seats on the board. [3]

Districts and current members

District 1 includes Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Morgan Hill, Gilroy, part of South San Jose, and some unincorporated area. It is represented by Supervisor Sylvia Arenas. [4]

District 2 includes part of San Jose and some unincorporated area. It is represented by Democratic Supervisor Cindy Chavez. [5]

District 3 includes Milpitas, parts of San Jose and Sunnyvale, and some unincorporated area. It is represented by Democratic Supervisor Otto Lee. [6]

District 4 includes Campbell, Santa Clara, part of San Jose, and some unincorporated area. It is represented by Democratic Supervisor Susan Ellenberg. [7]

District 5 includes Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Saratoga, part of Sunnyvale, and some unincorporated area. It is represented by Democratic Supervisor Joe Simitian. [8]

The Santa Clara Valley is a geologic trough in Northern California that extends 90 miles (140 km) south–southeast from San Francisco to Hollister. The longitudinal valley is bordered on the west by the Santa Cruz Mountains and on the east by the Diablo Range; the two coastal ranges meet south of Hollister. The San Francisco Bay borders the valley to the north, and fills much of the northern third of the valley. The valley floor is an alluvial plain that formed in the graben between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward and Calaveras faults to the east. Within the valley and surrounding the bay on three sides are the urban communities of San Mateo County, Santa Clara County, and Alameda County, while the narrow southern reaches of the valley extend into rural San Benito County to Hollister. In practical terms, the central portion of the Santa Clara Valley is often considered by itself, contained entirely within Santa Clara County.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, more commonly known simply as the Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), is a special district responsible for public transit services, congestion management, specific highway improvement projects, and countywide transportation planning for Santa Clara County, California. It serves San Jose, California, and the surrounding Silicon Valley. It is one of the governing parties for the Caltrain commuter rail line that serves the county. In 2022, the VTA's public transportation services had a combined ridership of 21,381,600, or about 76,000 per weekday as of the fourth quarter of 2022.

Saren Joseph Simitian is a California Democratic politician. From 2004 to 2012, he was the State Senator representing California's 11th State Senate district, which encompasses all or part of 13 cities in San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruz counties. Approaching his term limit at the end of 2012, he ran for and was elected as a Santa Clara County Supervisor. He was re-elected to the same seat in 2016 and again in 2020.

Liz Kniss is an American politician who served as Mayor of Palo Alto, California. Kniss was elected to the Palo Alto City Council in 2013. She also serves on the boards of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Family Health Plan of Santa Clara County.

Other cities in Santa Clara County run their own library systems. Cindy Chavez is an American politician who serves as the Santa Clara County supervisor representing district two, which is home to nearly 400,000 residents in Downtown, East, and South San Jose. Her public service career began in the 1990s as a policy analyst for health care, public health, human services and transportation for the Board of Supervisors. She served two terms on the San Jose City Council, where she was also Vice Mayor, and also served on the board leadership of public agencies such as the San Jose Redevelopment Agency, and executive director of Working Partnerships USA and the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council. She has unsuccessfully run for Mayor of San Jose twice. She is a graduate of San Jose State University, is married and has a son in college.

Ken Yeager is an American politician. He served on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors, representing District 4. First elected to the board in 2006, he represented the cities of Campbell and Santa Clara, as well as west San Jose and the Burbank and Cambrian neighborhoods. Previously, Yeager served on the San Jose City Council from 2000 to 2006. Before that, he served two terms on the San Jose/Evergreen Community College Board. He was a candidate for the 23rd district seat in the California State Assembly in 1996, coming in second.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is a local law enforcement agency that serves Santa Clara County, California. It provides general-service law enforcement to unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County, as well as incorporated cities within the county that have contracted with the agency for law-enforcement services such as Saratoga, Cupertino, and Los Altos Hills. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority also contracted with the Sheriff's Office for law enforcement service.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Center for the Development of Recycling</span>

The Center for the Development of Recycling (CDR) is a university-based, non-profit, environmental research and service organization. The CDR operates the recycling and reuse website RecycleStuff.org for the counties of Santa Clara and San Mateo, a recycling call center and household hazardous waste appointment system for Santa Clara County, and has completed over 60 contracted projects. The CDR is located in the Department of Environmental Studies at San Jose State University (SJSU). Faculty-managed service-learning university students collect and populate the website with data, respond to information requests from the public, and work on recycling and waste reduction projects for the community. CDR student's provide the community with a cost-effient public service. Hundreds of its service learning students have completed internships with local government and industry and over 100 have transitioned from college to sustainable materials management careers with industry and government.

Diablo Range is an unincorporated census county division (CCD) located in the Diablo Mountains Range, on the eastern side of Santa Clara County, California.

2022 Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors election was held on November 8, 2022. Two of the five seats on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors were up for election. District 1 was an open seat due to the terming out of Supervisor Mike Wasserman. The was highly competitive and the first since the 2020 United States redistricting cycle which changed the boundaries of the District. Since District 4 was uncontested, incumbent Supervisor Susan Ellenberg did not appear on the November 8th ballot.
