Santa Clara High School (SCHS) is a private, Roman Catholic four-year high school serving grades 9-12 in Oxnard, California. It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Originally founded in September 1901, it is the oldest high school in Ventura County.

History

The school, originally named St. Joseph's Institute, was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet on September 2, 1901. The school moved to the top floor of the Santa Clara Elementary School building on South "E" Street, and in April 1930, the name was changed to Santa Clara High School. Over the next two decades, increasing enrollment necessitated a new facility, and under the leadership of Monsignor Anthony Jacobs, and a generous land grant from Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Friedrich, the new Santa Clara High School opened on South Saviers Road in the spring of 1952. In 1964, the high school annexed the adjacent empty junior high school facility, acquiring sixteen new classrooms, office space and a new auditorium, doubling the capacity of the high school.

In 1967, the school became an Archdiocesan high school and operational responsibility of the school shifted to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. In 1981, the Sisters of St. Joseph, who kept residences at the school, moved to St. Anthony's Convent and their space was renovated into additional classrooms and office space. In 1986 a new gymnasium, Friedrich Pavilion, was constructed.

Athletics

Santa Clara High School is a member school of the CIF Southern Section. As of 2018, the Saints compete in the Tri-County Athletic Association for all sports except football. [2] The school's football team competed in the Citrus Coast League in 2018, but left after one season as it switched to eight-man football from the conventional 11-man format due to a lack of players. [3]

Santa Clara is known for its success in basketball. Under head coach Lou Cvijanovich who began coaching the boys' team in the 1958–59 school year, the Saints won 30 league titles (most league titles of any high school program in the country), 15 CIF-SS titles (second most in California high school history), as well as three California state championships (1989, 1990, 1999). [4] The program appeared in three straight state championship games (1989–1991), winning titles in 1989 and 1990. In Cvijanovich's 41st and final season coaching for Santa Clara, the 1998–99 team captured the state title, winning 30 games and securing Cvijanovich's record 829th victory in the process. [4] Twenty years later in 2019, and just three months after the Cvijanovich's death, the Saints won a CIF-SS championship in 2019 under Bobby Tenorio. [5]

The Santa Clara boys' soccer team won its first CIF-SS championship in 2017. [6]

In an extraordinary season shaped by the pandemic's challenges, the Santa Clara Saints Girls Basketball team emerged as shining stars, scripting a remarkable journey of triumph. In 2021, they etched their names in history by clinching an outright Tri-Valley League Championship with an perfect record in league play, a feat never before achieved by the program during a spring season. Under the guidance of Coach Nick Kindel, whose leadership garnered him the title of 2021 Tri-Valley League Coach of the Year, the team exhibited unparalleled resilience and skill. At the forefront of their success stood Sofia Maldonado, whose stellar performance earned her the coveted title of 2021 Tri-Valley League MVP. But the team's excellence wasn't confined to one player. Maddyson White, Yazmin Wiggins, and Ariana Maldonado showcased their talent and dedication, earning spots on the First Team All-League for the Tri-Valley League . Additionally, Abrial Ramirez and Amanda Flores demonstrated their prowess, securing positions on the Second Team All-League for the Tri-Valley League. Together, this exceptional team exemplified teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship, inspiring fans and leaving an indelible mark on the legacy of Santa Clara Saints Girls Basketball. Rio Mesa High School (RMHS) is a high school in Ventura County, California. Located northeast of Oxnard, the school is surrounded by strawberry fields and other crops growing on the Oxnard Plain. The school is part of the Oxnard Union High School District (OUHSD) and serves a portion of northeast Oxnard and western Camarillo as well as the unincorporated communities of El Rio, Strickland, and Nyeland Acres. The name "Rio Mesa", conceived by OUHSD board member Bob Matthews at the time of the school's founding in 1965, is derived from the two original elementary school districts that fed the school — Rio and Mesa Union; since then, it has also regularly received students from the Pleasant Valley and Oxnard Elementary districts. Sam Cvijanovich is a former linebacker in the Canadian Football League. Cvijanovich was a notable player for the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen during the 1971 NAIA Division II Football National Championship. He has been named “the hardest hitter I’ve ever coached” by head coach Bob Shoup. Nicknamed "Jawbone", Cvijanovich was six foot and 205 lbs. He was later named NAIA District III Player of the Year in both his junior and senior years at Cal Lutheran. He was later drafted to the Canadian Football League after his collegiate career and was selected as the CFL Rookie of the Year in 1974 as a middle linebacker with the Toronto Argonauts. He set a record for interceptions by a linebacker as a rookie and played three seasons for Toronto before being traded to Vancouver. He ended his 1977 season and retired due to foot injuries.

The Tri-County Athletic Association (TCAA) is a high school athletic conference in California affiliated with the CIF Southern Section. Established in 2006, the association is an amalgamation of the Tri-Valley League and the Frontier League. The TCAA uses a system of promotion and relegation to place each school's teams, by sport and gender, into either league for a two-year period based on performance. As of the 2018–19 school year, the association is composed primarily of private schools located in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

The Coastal Canyon League (CCL) is a high school athletic conference that is affiliated with the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS). The league was established in 2014 during the CIF-SS Northern Area's biennial releaguing process, drawing several members from the Marmonte League as well as Camarillo and Oak Park high schools. All members are located in Ventura County.

The Citrus Coast League (CCL) is a high school athletic conference in California that is affiliated with the CIF Southern Section. Established in 2018, the league consists primarily of small public high schools in Ventura County, with one member each in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties. Most CCL schools competed previously as members of the Tri-County Athletic Association, with Hueneme High School joining from the Pacific View League.

Grace Brethren Jr./Sr. High School (GBHS) is a co-educational, college-preparatory Christian school in Simi Valley, California serving grades 7–12. The school is one of three campuses in Simi Valley comprising the Grace Brethren Schools, the others being an elementary school and a preschool.
