The Santiago South Basketball Championships (Portuguese: Campeonato (Regional de) Basquetebol (Basquete) de Santiago Sul) is a regional basketball championship played in the south of Santiago Island, Cape Verde and is a part of the Santiago South Regional Basketball Association. [1] The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean Basketball Championships each season.

The championship is organized by the São Vicente Regional Football Association. The winner of the championship plays in Cape Verdean football Championships of each season. In 1989, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017, a second place club participated in the national championships, Académica do Mindelo in 1989, Mindelense in 2014 and FC Derby in 2015 and in 2016 and will be for 2017. The 7th place club plays with a Second Division runner-up in a division decisional match to decide on promoting or remain in the Second Division. The last placed club relegated into the São Vicente Second Division. Up to around 2010, only a club was relegated into that division.

Football is the most popular sport in Cape Verde. The league is divided into eleven divisions, of which seven of them are singles and two islands, Santiago and Santo Antão has two zones since 2000. The football association is a federation which is known as the Cape Verdean Football Federation, it became affiliated with CAF in 1986 and later with FIFA in 2001.

GimnodesportivoVavá Duarte is a multi-purpose stadium in Praia, Cape Verde south of the city center's plateau in the subdivision of Gamboa just south of Várzea and is located on Avenida de Cuba, a road connecting the south of the city and the north and the southwest of the island. It is currently used for basketball, volleyball and futsal matches. The arena are operated by the Santiago South Regional Basketball Association for basketball, the Santiago South Regional Volleyball Association for volleyball and probably the Santiago Regional Futsal Association for futsal. These associations are also headquartered in the arena and around it.

The football association is the second largest behind Boa Vista and ahead of Santo Antão South. The association are one of three championship competitions that play in more than one stadium.
