Santosh Yadav (born 10 October 1967) is an Indian mountaineer. She is the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest twice [1] and the first woman to successfully climb Mount Everest from Kangshung Face. When she was young or in teenage she usually took steps to criticise the beliefs and traditions followed in the society. One of them was the outfit which was followed by criticism of the [2] of girls. She often preferred to wear shorts while all the other girls in her society of the Joinyawas village of Rewari District of Haryana [3] wear sarees and traditional outfit. She was and still is very much determined and have a great knowledge of right and wrong. She said," From the very beginning I was quite determined that if I chose a correct and rational path, the others around me had to change,not me." She climbed the peak first in May 1992 and again in May 1993 with an Indo-Nepalese Team.

During her Everest mission in 1992, she saved the life of a climber, Mohan Singh, by sharing oxygen with him. She also tried to help a mountaineer who lay dying at the South Col but was unsuccessful in saving him. [4]

Early life and education

She was born in Joniyawas village in Rewari district of Haryana state, India as the sixth child in a family of five boys. She earlier attended a local village school and then moved to Delhi and got enrolled in a school there. Have a mind of studying a little bit more she attended Maharani College in Jaipur, where she was able to see mountaineers climbing Aravalli Range from her room. She was inspired by this to join Uttarkashi's Nehru Institute of Mountaineering while successfully continuing her studies for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exams in a hostel provided by the Amity University at Noida. [5] Yadav's interest in mountaineering developed during her time at the University.

Career

In 1992, Yadav scaled Mount Everest , when she was barely 20, becoming the youngest woman in the world to achieve this feat, a record which was broken by 13-year-old Purna, in 2014. [6] Within twelve months, she became a member of an Indo-Nepalese Women's expedition and scaled Everest the second time, thus setting the record as the first woman to have scaled Everest twice. [7] She also remained as an officer in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police. [8] She was a part of the nine-nation international climbing camp-cum-expedition to Nun Kun in 1989. Also, her being a fervent environmentalist, she collected 500 kg of dumped wastes from the Himalayas. [9]

Santosh Yadav was awarded the National Adventure Award 1994 and Padma Shri in 2000. [10] [1]

Mohan Singh Gunjyal is an Indian mountaineer and adventure sportsman. He is one of the summiters of Mount Everest, entering the list when he successfully climbed the highest peak in the world on 12 May 1992. He achieved the feat, taking the Southeast ridge route via the south face, as a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police Everest expedition group, which included Santosh Yadav, the first woman to summit the peak twice within a year. He has received the Tenzing Norgay National Award for outstanding achievement from the President of India in 2004. He is a former Assistant Commandant of Indo-Tibetan Border Police and presently working as Director at the Uttarkashi-based Nanda Devi Institute of Adventure Sports and Outdoor Education. The Government of India awarded him with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2004 in lifetime achievement category and the fourth highest civilian honor of the Padma Shri, in 2006, for his contributions to the sport of mountaineering.

Dicky Dolma is an Indian mountaineer, known for being the youngest woman to summit Mount Everest up to that time at the age of 19 on 10 May 1993. This occurred on the Indo-Nepal Everest Expedition. This Indo-Nepal Women's Everest Expedition was led by Bachendri Pal who was the first Indian woman to summit Mount Everest in 1984. Dicky was also a skier and attended numerous sporting competitions including the 1989 All-India Open Auli Ski Festival and the Asian Winter Games in 1999. She took ski training courses and basic mountaineering courses by the Manali Institute. In the same expedition as Dicky Dolma, Santosh Yadav summited Mount Everest for the second time, the first woman to summit twice. Dolma came from Palchan Village near Manali of Himachal Pradesh state in India. She was also awarded the 1994 National Adventure Award.

The Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, formerly known as the National Adventure Awards is the highest adventure sports honour of the Republic of India. The award is named after Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest along with Edmund Hillary in 1953. It is awarded annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. The recipients are honoured for their "outstanding achievement in the field of adventure activities on land, sea and air" over the last three years. The lifetime achievement is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated excellence and have devoted themselves in the promotion of adventure sports. As of 2020, the award comprises "a bronze statuette of Tenzing Norgay along with a cash prize of 15 lakh (US$19,000)."

Sunita Singh Choken is an Indian mountaineer and activist. She climbed Mount Everest in 2011. Afterwards she did two long-distance cycle trips to promote both the environment and the "Save, educate the girl child" campaign. She has received several awards including the 2016 Nari Shakti Puraskar.

Narender Singh Yadav is an Indian mountaineer. He is best known for his controversial climbing expedition to Mount Everest in May 2016, where he claimed to have summitted the mountain but had recognition of this attempt stripped years later after discrepancies were noticed which indicated he had faked the summit, leading to his 2020 Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award being revoked and a ban from the mountain for six years from the climbing date by the Nepali government in 2021. In May 2022, soon after his ban expired, he again went to Everest and successfully reached the summit with ample proof that he had actually done so.
