SciTechDaily is a popular science website, containing sections on space, physics, biology, technology and chemistry. [1] [2] It was founded in 1998 by Vicki Hyde, [2] originally as Sci Tech Daily Review, a companion site to Arts & Letters Daily . [3] [1] It became popular as a news aggregation site for science and technology content, featuring curated links with brief summaries to third-party sites such as NOVA: Science in the news; [4] magazines such as The Discovery Channel, Scientific American , Popular Science ; [4] niche sites such as The Apothecary's Drawer,Brain.com, and the Glossary of Mathematical Mistakes; [5] as well as international newspapers. Since 2011, SciTechDaily has changed its format to publish articles directly on its site, rather than providing a daily digest of links. [2] According to the publisher, its content is republished on sites such as Yahoo!News , Ars Technica , and Futurism, and many others. [2]

History

SciTech Daily Review was launched in 1998, as a companion site to Arts & Letters Daily, with the encouragement of Denis Dutton. [6] Managing editor Hyde, a member of The Skeptics Society, [6] worked on the website with a business partner out of Christchurch, New Zealand, during her spare time as a mother. [7] In December 1998, an article in The New York Times characterized Sci Tech Daily Review and Arts & Letters Daily as "portholes" rather than portals, because they offered "narrower windows" to view an "expansive sea of on-line information". [3] [1] In 2002, SciTech Daily Review was selected as one of five final nominations in the Science Category for a Webby Award. [8] [7] [6]

In April 2011, SciTech Daily recovered from a six-week hiatus, following the Christchurch earthquake in February. [6] Later that year, the wiste transitioned to new management as well as overhauled the website’s format and design to publish articles directly rather than providing links and digests. [2] As of May 2022, it is estimated that SciTech has 8.7 million monthly readers, [9] and is a top 30 science and education website by traffic worldwide. [10]

Reviews

In November 1999, a review of popular science websites in the Independent rated Sci Tech Daily as "the best science news site" at the time, with the caveat that it had a "perfunctory design"; the article described it as a links page that "culled the best science features, news stories and book reviews from dozens of science magazines, journals and newspapers." [11]

A June 2000 review in Design News described www.scitechdaily.com as "a potpourri of links and information" with "news from around the world, a comprehensive listing of technology publications, plus a nice choice of a variety of 'techie' sites". [12] A 2002 review in Industrial Engineer: IE found the content "riveting", covering topics such as the half-life of a teaspoon; why emotions and rational thought are similar; and why drug companies won't fund certain studies. [13]

An in-depth review which appeared in Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries in 2015 noted that "SciTechDaily appears to edit sources more heavily for readability and publishes fewer articles overall and so may be preferred by those who find ScienceDaily overwhelming". [1]

At one point, the network had as many as 90 blogs, although the vast majority of its traffic could be attributed to a smaller number of breakout titles, as was typical of most large-scale successful blog networks of the mid-2000s. Popular blogs included Engadget, Autoblog, TUAW, Joystiq, Luxist, Slashfood, Cinematical, TV Squad, Download Squad, Blogging Baby, Gadling, AdJab, and Blogging Stocks.

The 2001 Webby Awards were held in San Francisco at the War Memorial Opera House on July 18, 2001, hosted by Alan Cumming. The Lifetime Achievement Award, which debuted this year, went to Ray Tomlinson and Douglas Engelbart. It was the first awards held after the dot-com crash; as a result, they were smaller and quieter than in years past. The organization hired agency Diesel Design to create three ancillary sites to their main one for the 2001 ceremony, one site dedicated to award nominees, an RSVP site for guests, and a site for the winners. The agency also created print and online ads for the awards show, as well as interior signage, posters, and invitations.

Live Science is a science news website. It publishes stories in a wide variety of topics such as Space, Animals, Health, Archaeology, Human behavior and Planet Earth. It also has a Forum section for open discussions and a Reference section with links to other sites. Their mission is "make the wonders of science and the world around us relevant, useful and interesting to everyone by informing and entertaining our readers ".

Revision3 was a San Francisco–based multi-channel television network that created, produced and distributed streaming television shows on niche topics. Founded in 2005, it operated as a subsidiary of Discovery Digital Networks since 2012. The network produced technology and gaming oriented programming in tandem with traditional comedic, political, DIY, and movie-related content. On March 31, 2017, Discovery Communications closed the website.

An owner moderates each board, with minimal interaction from site administration. The site has been linked to white supremacism, neo-Nazism, the alt-right, racism and antisemitism, hate crimes, and multiple mass shootings. The site has been known to host child pornography; as a result, it was filtered out from Google Search in 2015. Several of the site's boards played an active role in the Gamergate harassment campaign, encouraging Gamergate affiliates to frequent 8chan after 4chan banned the topic. 8chan is the home of the discredited QAnon conspiracy theory.

Taboola is a public advertising company headquartered in New York City. It provides "content recommendation" sponsored links to advertising partners.
