Scott L. King was mayor of Gary,Indiana from 1996 to 2006,when he resigned.
King received his bachelor's degree from Concordia University and his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law. He practiced law in Gary,Indiana. King was a prosecutor for the state of Indiana and an assistant United States attorney for the Northern District of Indiana. [1]
He was Gary's first white mayor since the election of Richard Hatcher in 1967. A member of the Democratic Party for most of his time in office,King left the party to become an independent in 2005,shortly before his resignation. He was briefly succeeded by then-deputy mayor and former Calumet Township trustee Dozier T. Allen as acting mayor,and subsequently by Rudy Clay. [2] [3]

Hatcher also served as Vice-Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in the early 1980s.

Katie Beatrice Hall was an American educator in Gary, Indiana, and a politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Indiana from 1982 to 1985. When Hall was sworn into federal office on November 2, 1982, she became the first black woman from Indiana elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Hall represented Indiana's 1st Congressional District in the final months of the 97th Congress and an entire two-year term in the 98th Congress from 1983 to 1985. She is best known for sponsoring legislation and leading efforts on the floor of the U.S. House in 1983 to make Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a national holiday after previous efforts had failed. H.R. 3706 to establish the third Monday in January as a federal holiday in King's honor was introduced in July 1983 and passed in the House on August 2, 1983. President Ronald Reagan signed the bill into law on November 2, 1983.
The Valparaiso University Law School was the law school of Valparaiso University, a private university in Valparaiso, Indiana. Founded in 1879, the school was accredited by the American Bar Association in 1929 and admitted to the Association of American Law Schools in 1930. In October 2016, the ABA censured the school for admitting applicants who did not appear capable of satisfactorily completing the school's program of legal education and being admitted to the bar. One year later, the school suspended admissions and shut down after the last class graduated in 2020.

Rudolph M. Clay Sr. was an American activist and politician who was active in Indiana politics as a member of the Democratic Party. Clay was first active in politics with his election to the Indiana Senate from the 3rd district, then served in local politics in Lake County, Indiana, and served as the 19th Mayor of Gary, Indiana. He was the first black person elected to the state senate from Lake County and the first black person elected countywide in Lake County.
