Scott Alexander Millan (born 1954) is an American sound re-recording mixer, [1] a member of the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, [2] and Sound Director for Technicolor at Paramount Studios. [3] He is known for his collaborations with Sam Mendes, Tate Taylor, Oliver Stone, Frank Marshall, as well as his early work with Judd Apatow and the Farrelly brothers. Millan has won four Academy Awards for his work in sound for motion picture. [4]

Personal life

Millan was born in Los Angeles, California and attended Ulysses S. Grant High School in the Valley Glen neighborhood of Los Angeles.[ citation needed ] His father Art Millan and mother Lynn were both television and film actors in the 1950s. He married Deborah and had two children; the former The Young and the Restless actress Ashley Nicole Millan [8] and Brandon Millan.

BAFTA Film Awards

The BAFTA Award is an annual award show presented by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. The awards were founded in 1947 as The British Film Academy, by David Lean, Alexander Korda, Carol Reed, Charles Laughton, Roger Manvell and others. Millan has received four awards from five nominations.

The award used to go to the studio sound departments until a rule change in 1969 said it should be awarded to the specific technicians. He won an Academy Award in 2011 in the category Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing for Hugo and has received four other Oscar nominations for Reds (1982), The Silence of the Lambs (1992), Gangs of New York (2003), and The Aviator (2004).

Andy Nelson is a British re-recording mixer and sound engineer working in Los Angeles, California, United States. He has won two Academy Awards for Best Sound and has been nominated for 22 more in the same category. He has worked on over 150 films since 1980. Dominick Tavella is an American sound engineer. He has been sound mixing since 1976 and specializes in balancing and recording the final soundtrack in its many formats for film, TV, and documentaries. D.A. Pennebaker was one of his college instructors who eventually became his mentor and later connected him to his first sound job. His first Union was as a transfer engineer, later a re-recording engineer, at DuArt Film Laboratory in New York City. There he mixed documentaries and low budget feature films. In 1988, Tavella joined Sound One where he built his reputation among clients such as Paul Schrader, Jim Jarmusch, Darren Aronofsky, Ric Burns, and Ken Burns. His documentaries, Jazz and New York were both nominated for Emmys for best sound. In 2003, he won an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing and a BAFTA for best sound for the film Chicago. He has worked on more than 180 films since 1981.

John Pritchett is an American sound engineer for film. He has been nominated for two Academy Awards in the category Best Sound for the films Road to Perdition and Memoirs of a Geisha. He was nominated for two Cinema Audio Society Awards, winning best sound on The Road to Perdition. He was also nominated for a BAFTA Award for his work on There Will Be Blood. Simon Hayes is a British sound engineer. Hayes won an Academy Award for Best Sound at the 85th Academy Awards for his work on Les Misérables. He won a BAFTA for Best Sound for the same film. In 2022, the 94th Academy Awards included Hayes as a nominee for Best Sound Mixing for his work on No Time to Die.

Bernard Gariépy Strobl is a Canadian re-recording sound mixer, best known internationally as the supervising re-recording mixer of Arrival (2016), for which he won the BAFTA Award for Best Sound and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing. He has been a re-recording mixer on many prominent Quebec films of the last two decades, including The Red Violin (1998), C.R.A.Z.Y. (2005), Monsieur Lazhar (2011), War Witch (2012), Gabrielle (2013), and Endorphine (2015).

The Cinema Audio Society Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Live Action is an annual award given by the Cinema Audio Society to live action motion picture sound mixer for their outstanding achievements in sound mixing. The award came to its current title in 2013, when feature motion pictures were separated into two categories; achievement in live action sound mixing, and achievement in animated sound mixing. Before this, the category was labeled Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for Motion Pictures, and was given annually starting in 1994.
