Parliamentary elections were held in the Moldavian SSR in February and March 1990 to elect the 380 members of the Supreme Soviet. They were the first and only free elections to the Supreme Soviet of the MSSR, and although the Communist Party of Moldova was the only registered party allowed to contest the election, opposition candidates were allowed to run as independents. Together with affiliated groups, the Popular Front of Moldova won a landslide victory. Candidates who were openly supporters of the Popular Front won about 27% of seats; together with moderate Communists, mainly from rural districts, they commanded a majority.

Sergiu Toma is a Moldovan-born Emirati judoka. He competed for the United Arab Emirates in the 81 kg category at the 2016 Olympic Games and defeated Takanori Nagase to enter the semi-finals. He lost his semi-final match to Khasan Khalmurzaev, but then beat Matteo Marconcini in the bronze medal match. At the 2008 and 2012 Olympics he competed for Moldova but was eliminated in the early rounds.

Sergiu Sîrbu is a Moldovan politician and jurist, who started serving in 2010 as Deputy in the Parliament of Moldova as member of the faction of Democratic Party of Moldova. On 11 July 2014, Sîrbu became Deputy President of the Parliament of Moldova. Sergiu Sîrbu was member of Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova until 12 December 2012, when he left the party. The same year, Sîrbu is member of Democratic Party of Moldova.
