Severed is an action-adventure video game developed and published by DrinkBox Studios for the PlayStation Vita, iOS, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch. It was released on April 26, 2016, in North America and Europe for the PlayStation Vita and it was released on Wii U and iOS on September 22, 2016. [1] It was released on Nintendo 3DS in Europe on September 22, 2016, North America on October 13, 2016. [2] It was released in Japan on December 28, 2016. [3]

Development

On April 14, 2014, DrinkBox Studios announced Severed in association with video game blog Destructoid. Because of its heavy focus on touchscreen controls, Severed was anticipated as a game for mobile devices, though DrinkBox Studios was considering versions for other devices like the PlayStation Vita, the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, too. Motion-sensing technologies like PlayStation Move and Kinect were considered. However, the developers did not confirm the game for any of these platforms at that time. DrinkBox Studios was aiming for a release of Severed in 2015. [4] At the PlayStation Experience 2014 in December, DrinkBox Studios announced that Severed would be released on PlayStation Vita, continuing the trend of DrinkBox' previous games of releasing on PlayStation platforms first. [5] After being delayed, [6] DrinkBox Studios announced on April 11, 2016, that Severed would be released for PlayStation Vita on April 26. [7]

On June 13, 2016, during the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016, Severed was announced for both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. [8] The game supports cross-buy, so if a user buys it on the Wii U, they also get the game free on the 3DS. [9] The Nintendo Switch version released on August 8, 2017. [10]

Music

The soundtrack [11] for Severed was created as a collaboration between the Juno and Polaris-nominated band Yamantaka // Sonic Titan and Pantayo, and was created with the support of FACTOR and the Canadian Government. Severed's soundtrack took home an award for Best Musical Score from the Canadian Videogame Awards [12]

Reception

The game received "generally favorable" reviews, according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. [13] It was named Apple's 2016 iPad Game of the Year. [25] During the 20th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated Severed for "Handheld Game of the Year". [26]

Unlike its predecessor, which was only released for the Wii, the game was released on the PlayStation 3, Wii, Wii U, and Xbox 360 in November 2012, and would make further releases on the PlayStation Vita, and Microsoft Windows over the next two years. The game features an optional co-op mode where a second player plays as Oswald and assist the first player, Mickey, in saving the Wasteland. The game also has a companion called Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion for the Nintendo 3DS. It was also the last game to be released by Junction Point Studios, as it was released two months before its closure.

A PlayStation Vita version was released in November 2013. A sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, was released in April 2014, itself based on the film.

Mutant Mudds is a platform video game developed by Renegade Kid. Players control Max and Granny as they combat the titular invaders following a meteorite crash. The enhanced Super Turbo Championship Edition was released for Wii U, Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 in July 2014 and later on the Nintendo Switch in October 2018. The game is inspired by traditional Mexican culture and folklore, like alebrijes and Day of the Dead.

Like its predecessor Retro City Rampage, it is a parody of multiple subjects, including retro games, 1980s pop culture, manipulative business practices, and Grand Theft Auto and similar games. It was released in 2019 on Microsoft Windows, and has since been released on various Nintendo and Sony platforms, including legacy consoles. Shakedown: Hawaii serves as the final game released for the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo 3DS, the latter of the three already receiving a digital release back in 2019.
