Shabareesh Varma is an Indian lyricist, singer and actor working predominantly in Malayalam films. [1]

Early life

Shabareesh Varma was born to P.K Nandana Varma and Sulekha Varma in North Paravur, Ernakulam. After completing the graduation course From MES College Marampally, Aluva,he studied in SAE Institute, Chennai and graduated in Audio Engineering and Music Production. He started his acting stint with a short film "Cling-Cling" followed by "Neram (short film)" in which he was the protagonist pitched up against Vijay Sethupathi (as Vatti Raja).

Film career

His first film as an actor and singer was the Tamil version of Neram directed by Alphonse Putharen. In 2015, he was a part of the Malayalam movie Premam as a lyricist, singer and actor. He wrote the lyrics for 7 songs, sang 5 of them and played the character 'Shambu' in the film.

Pistah as the IPL Anthem

The song Pistah, which Shabareesh sang for the Malayalam-Tamil bilingual Neram, was the promo song for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 edition. As a result of this, the peppy number was celebrated throughout India. [2]

Outside film industry

In 2016, he sang the official theme song of the Manjappada, which is the supporters group of Kerala Blasters. [7] In 2020, he wrote one song for Yennum Yellow, which is an album released by Kerala Blasters as a tribute to their fans. He also performed one song called 'Vaa Varika Vaa' which is written by Manu Manjith and Nikhil Thomas. [8]

Neram (transl. 'Time') is a 2013 Indian black comedy thriller film written, directed and edited by Alphonse Puthren in his directorial debut. It is simultaneously made in Malayalam and Tamil languages. It is an extended version of the short film of the same name, which he directed in 2009. It stars Nivin Pauly, Nazriya Nazim and Bobby Simha in both versions. Supporting roles were played by Manoj K. Jayan, Shammi Thilakan, Lalu Alex, and Willson Joseph in Malayalam version, while Nassar, Thambi Ramiah, John Vijay and Shabareesh Varma portrayed the characters in Tamil version.

He made his directional debut with the critically acclaimed Malayalam - Tamil bilingual suspense-thriller Neram (2013). Premam is the soundtrack album for the 2015 Malayalam film of the same name directed by Alphonse Puthren and starring Nivin Pauly. The original soundtrack and background score were composed by Rajesh Murugesan, who had collaborated with Puthren in the film Neram (2013). Shabareesh Varma, beside singing, wrote the lyrics for eight of the nine songs. One song "Rockaankuthu" which had lyrics written by Pradeep Palarr was sung by Tamil film composer Anirudh Ravichander. The soundtrack album was released by the record label Muzik 247 on 14 February 2015 and topped the charts, with songs "Aaluva Puzha" and "Malare" became instant hits. The album was listed as the Best Malayalam Music Album of the year by Apple Music.

<i>Turbo</i> (2024 film) 2024 Indian film by Vysakh

Turbo is an Indian Malayalam-language action comedy film directed by Vysakh, written by Midhun Manuel Thomas and produced by Mammootty under Mammootty Kampany. The film stars Mammootty in titular role, alongside Raj B. Shetty, Sunil and Kabir Duhan Singh in their debuts in Malayalam cinema. Anjana Jayaprakash, Bindu Panicker and Shabareesh Varma in prominent roles. The music was composed by Christo Xavier, while Vishnu Sarma and Shameer Muhammed handled the cinematography and editing respectively.
