Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar, SM, VSM (born 1962 [1] ), is a retired Indian Army officer who served as the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the second biggest peacekeeping operation. [2] He served from 24 May 2019 to January 2022. [3] He was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres [1] to succeed Lieutenant General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi of Rwanda. Prior to that, he served as the Commandant of the Indian Army Infantry School. [4] He is the recipient of the Sena Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service. [1]

Early life and education

Tinaikar graduated from the National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy in 1983. [2] He received an MPhil in defence and strategic studies from The University of Madras. [1]

Career

Tinaikar was commissioned into the elite 10 PARA (SF). He appointed the Commandant of the Infantry School in July 2018. he held the position of Additional Director General of Military Operations at the Army Headquarters from 2017 to 2018. He commanded a division, a recruit training centre and a brigade from 2012 to 2017.

Tinaikar served in the United Nations Angola Verification Mission III from 1996 to 1997 and, from 2008 to 2009, he served in the United Nations Mission in Sudan. [5]

On 24 May 2019, [1] Tinaikar was appointed as the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. [2]

United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) is a United Nations peacekeeping force in Abyei, which is contested between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan. UNISFA was approved on 27 June 2011 by the United Nations Security Council in United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990 after a flareup in the South Kordofan conflict earlier in June 2011. The Ethiopian Army is the largest contributor of personnel, and as of 2018, the only contributor of individual troops.

Indian Army United Nations peacekeeping missions

So far India has taken part in 49 Peacekeeping missions with a total contribution exceeding 200,000 troops and a significant number of police personnel having been deployed. In 2014 India is the third largest troop contributor country [TCC] with 7,860 personnel deployed with ten UN Peacekeeping Missions of which 995 are police personnel, including the first Female Formed Police Unit under the UN. Recently Indian Peacekeepers were lauded by the UN for their efforts in preventing a carnage in the South Sudan conflict which resulted in the death of two of its soldiers.

He was previously the Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, being was appointed on 11 April 2017 by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Prior to that, he was the Force Commander of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur.

She graduated from the Officer Cadet School, Portsea and was commissioned into the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police in 1985. She has commanded the Defence Police Training Centre (2003), 1st Military Police Battalion (2006–08), Task Group Afghanistan (2016) and Australian Defence Force Academy (2017–18), and has served on operations in East Timor and Afghanistan. She was Force Commander, United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus from January 2019 to January 2021 and, following her retirement from the Australian Army, was appointed Deputy Commissioner Ports and Enforcement in the Australian Border Force in August 2021.
