Shannons Legends of Motorsport was an Australian motor racing television series that aired on 7mate. First aired in 2014, each episode featured a particular topic from the history of Australian motor racing, with a focus on touring cars. The show included a mix of interviews, analysis and historical footage. [1]
The 'Shannons' in the show's title refers to Shannons Insurance who have a sponsorship arrangement with the show. This was the second motor racing television show aligned with Shannons, following the Shannons Supercar Showdown which aired from 2011 to 2013. [2]
The show was launched in July 2014 to complement the Seven Network (parent network of 7mate)'s coverage of V8 Supercars. It aired on Saturdays, but only on weekends that did not coincide with a championship event of the 2014 V8 Supercars season. Hosted by commentator and former driver Neil Crompton, who was also the executive producer, the show used the Seven Network's historical motor racing footage, with the network having held the broadcast rights for touring car racing in Australia, including the Australian Touring Car Championship and Bathurst 1000, in various stages from 1963 to 1996. [3] Season 1 episodes included features on iconic drivers, teams and eras of Australian motor racing.
In late 2014, Crompton left the Seven Network to follow the V8 Supercars broadcast rights to Foxtel and Network Ten. [4] Following this, journalist Bill Woods replaced Crompton as host for Season 2 in 2015. [1] From 1997 to 2006, Woods had hosted RPM , a motor racing program on Ten, and has also written a book on the legends of Australian motor racing. Aaron Noonan also took on a greater role as co-host of the show for the new season. Season 2 covered a wider range of topics than Season 1, including documentary presentations of three Bathurst 1000s. [5] It also featured an episode detailing the history of the Seven Network's motor racing broadcasts, including the invention of RaceCam. [6] Episodes were later repeated on 7mate in an early morning timeslot. [7]
In 2017, online-only episodes were released on the Shannons website.
Each episode, produced by Crompton's production company AirTime Media, was recorded in front of a studio audience and featured one or more motor racing figures in conversation with the host. This was intertwined with historical footage and highlights, as well as pre-recorded comments about the episode's theme from former drivers and team owners. The exceptions to this were the episodes which featured a Bathurst 1000 race, which featured no studio guests and only pre-recorded interviews to narrate and accompany extended race highlights. As well as the host, there were also two other on-screen contributors to the show; Aaron Noonan, who researched and introduced video clips from the Seven Network vault, and Mark Oastler, who discussed historic racing cars situated in the studio. [8] Oastler only appeared in selected episodes in Season 2.
In Season 1, each episode was filmed at one of three Australian locations, in front of a range of cars relevant to the theme of the episode. These three locations were the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst, New South Wales, Bowden's Own Car Collection in Buderim, Sunshine Coast, Queensland and the Shannons National Auction Centre in Cheltenham, Melbourne, Victoria. [8] For Season 2, only the Bowden's Own Car Collection was retained as a filming location, with a Seven Network studio in Melbourne becoming another location. The studio featured a video screen background instead of the historic cars seen in other filming locations.

Shannons Legends of Motorsport received awards from both the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport and the V8 Media Association in 2014. [1]
The twelve episodes of Season 1 were released in a DVD box set by Chevron Marketing Services in August 2015. [8] Season 2 was released in a box set in July 2016. [10]
The Supercars Championship is a touring car racing category in Australia, running as an International Series under Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) regulations, governing the sport.

Mark SkaifeOAM is a retired Australian motor racing driver. Skaife is a five-time champion of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, including its predecessor, the Australian Touring Car Championship, as well as a six-time Bathurst 1000 winner. On 29 October 2008, he announced his retirement from full-time touring car racing. Since retiring from driving, Skaife has worked as a commentator and presenter for the series for both the Seven Network and Fox Sports Australia.
Jason Eric Bargwanna is an Australian motor racing driver. Best known as a Supercars Championship competitor, Bargwanna raced in the series for 25 years, the pinnacle of which was winning, with Garth Tander, the 2000 Bathurst 1000 in a Garry Rogers Motorsport prepared Holden Commodore. Bargwanna was the Driving Standards Observer for the Supercars Championship from 2014 until 2016.
Walkinshaw Andretti United is an Australian motor racing team based in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton. The team, initially branded as the Holden Racing Team, used to field Holden Commodores in the Supercars Championship before making the switch to Ford Mustangs for the 2023 season. The two cars are currently driven by Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert.

RPM is an Australian motorsports and automotive television program that airs on Network Ten. The show returned to Ten in 2015, after originally airing from 1997 to 2008 on the same network, as well as in 2011 on sister channel One. The show currently airs on Sunday afternoons, having held a variety of timeslots over the show's history.
Mark "Larko" Larkham is a retired Australian racing driver, former racing team owner and television commentator.
Chaz Mostert is an Australian professional racing driver competing in the Repco Supercars Championship. He currently drives the No. 25 Ford Mustang GT for Walkinshaw Andretti United. Mostert was the winner of the 2021 Bathurst 1000 with Lee Holdsworth and has also previously won the 2014 Bathurst 1000 with Paul Morris and the 2010 Australian Formula Ford Championship.
V8Xtra was an Australian V8 Supercar focused sports panel television program, that aired weekly on the Seven Network from 5 May 2007 to 6 December 2014. It was hosted by former racing driver Neil Crompton and featured former drivers Mark Skaife and Mark Larkham as analysts. Each episode featured previews or reviews of events, as well as interviews with drivers and features on teams.
The Shannons Supercar Showdown was an Australian reality television show based around the International V8 Supercars Championship, with drivers competing for a test driver role with Ford Performance Racing. Aired on 7mate in Australia, seasons two and three of the series have appeared in syndication in the United States on Vibrant TV Network.
Cameron Waters is an Australian motor racing driver who competes in the Repco Supercars Championship. He currently drives the No. 6 Ford Mustang GT for Tickford Racing. He is the cousin of Australian Superbike champion Josh Waters and currently holds the record for the youngest driver to compete in the Bathurst 1000, after winning the Shannons Supercar Showdown reality TV show in 2011. Cameron Waters won the 2015 V8 Supercar Dunlop Series with Prodrive Racing Australia in a Ford FG Falcon.

The 2021 Supercars Championship was a motor racing series for Supercars. It was the twenty-third running of the Supercars Championship and the twenty-fifth series in which Supercars have contested the Australian Touring Car Championship, the premier title in Australian motorsport. Atlanta-based international auto parts conglomerate Genuine Parts Company, through the consumer auto parts brand Repco, replaced Virgin Australia as naming rights sponsor under a five-year partnership, which was later expanded to eight years at the end of the 2022 prizegiving banquet.
The 2022 Bathurst 1000 was a motor racing event for Supercars held on the week of 6 to 9 October 2022. It hosted the eleventh round of the 2022 Supercars Championship. It took place at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia and featured a single 1000 kilometre race.
