Sharon Nir (born 3 November 1970) is an Israeli politician who currently serves as a member of the Knesset for Yisrael Beiteinu following the 2022 Israeli legislative election.

Biography

Sharon Nir was born on 3 November 1970 [1] in Haifa. [2] Nir enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces in 1989, and was assigned to the C4I Corps. [3] [4] In 1990, she became an officer and a platoon commander in the 162nd Division. She later became the first woman to train officers for the C4I Corps.[ citation needed ]

In 2003, Nir was appointed to lead a new department responsible for planning and organization in the corps. In 2007, she was appointed commander of a Battalion in the Central Command, becoming the first woman to command an operational communications battalion. She commanded the battalion until 2009. [5] In 2015, Nir was appointed to lead C4I's main Training Base. Becoming the first woman to hold the position. [6] In 2016, she was made the Chief of Staff's advisor on Gender Affairs, a position she held until September 2019. [7] [8]

On 27 August 2022, It was announced that Nir had joined Yisrael Beiteinu. [9] She was placed fourth in the party's electoral slate ahead of the 2022 election to the Knesset. [10] Nir was elected to the Knesset and sworn in on 15 November. [7]

Personal life

Nir has a Bachelor's degree in Behavioural sciences and a Master's degree in Business management, both from Ben-Gurion University. She is also a graduate of the National Security College.[ citation needed ] Before entering politics, Nir worked as a Lecturer for Reichman University. [1]

Nir lives in Modi'in-Maccabim-Re'ut, and is married to Yariv Nir, [1] who was also an officer for C4I. [11] The couple has three children. [1]

Likud, officially known as Likud – National Liberal Movement, is a major right-wing political party in Israel. It was founded in 1973 by Menachem Begin and Ariel Sharon in an alliance with several right-wing parties. Yisrael Beiteinu is a secularist, conservative, nationalist and right-wing political party in Israel. The party's base was originally secular Russian-speaking Israelis, although support from that demographic is in decline. The party describes itself as "a national movement with the clear vision to follow in the bold path of Zev Jabotinsky", the founder of Revisionist Zionism. It has primarily represented immigrants from the former Soviet Union, although it has attempted to expand its appeal to more established Israelis.

A leadership election was held by the Likud party on 19 December 2005. former Prime Minister and Party Leader Benjamin Netanyahu defeated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom, as well as candidates Moshe Feiglin and Israel Katz.
