Sheahon Jay Zenger (born April 13, 1966) has three decades of experience in academic and athletic administration, development, and coaching. Zenger currently serves as the 21st president for Illinois Wesleyan University, a role he was appointed on April 10th 2024. Earlier in his career, he held one of the highest-level athletics director positions in the nation at the University of Kansas. [1] He also served as athletic director at Illinois State University. [2] His recently served as the interim president at the University of New Haven. [3]

On April 10, 2024, Zenger was named as the 21st President of Illinois Wesleyan University, effective July 1, 2024.

Academic Administration

University of New Haven

Zenger became interim president of the University of New Haven on July 1, 2022, as part of an innovative leadership transition plan designed to build upon the university’s rich success and to position it for continued long-term growth. [4]

Texas Christian University

Prior to joining the University of New Haven, worked closely with the chancellor at Texas Christian University. [5]

Athletic Administration

University of New Haven

Zenger was introduced as the director of athletics and recreation at the University of New Haven on September 5, 2019, succeeding former NFL head coach Chris Palmer, who retired from the school's athletic director position in June 2019. Zenger was hired to direct the university's exploration of a potential move from NCAA Division II to Division I, oversee construction of new athletic facilities, as well as guide the New Haven Department of Athletics' multi-million capital fundraising campaign for athletics.

University of Kansas

In January 2011, Zenger was named the next athletics director for the University of Kansas. [6] One month later on February 1, 2011, Zenger officially took over the Kansas Athletics Department after the school was battling a ticket scandal from former employees. [7] During his time at Kansas, Zenger has hired two football coaches, Charlie Weis and David Beaty in hopes to produce a winning program. [8] Since September 2017, Zenger has spearheaded a $350 million campaign to renovate Memorial Stadium and rename it to the "David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium", [9] after alumni David Booth pledged $50 million to the Athletics Department. [10] During his tenure at Kansas the athletics department built nine new facilities. Zenger was fired on May 21, 2018 due to a "lack of progress" within the department. [11]

Illinois State

In April 2005, Zenger was named the next athletic director at Illinois State University. [12] While at Illinois State, Zenger focused on athletes' academics increasing their grade point averages, resulting in more scholarship opportunities through donors. [13] Zenger also contracted with Nike and multi-million dollar renovations to athletic facilities.

Lew Perkins was an American athletic director. He ended his 40-year career at the University of Kansas (KU), having joined in June 2003, taking over for Al Bohl. Perkins previously held similar positions with the University of Connecticut, University of Maryland, College Park, Wichita State University and University of South Carolina Aiken where he gained a reputation for successfully cleaning up schools suffering under NCAA violations. Under Perkins direction, the athletics program at KU had several successful seasons, including winning the 2008 Orange Bowl in football and the 2008 men's basketball championship. His tenure, though, ultimately ended in scandal and early retirement in 2010.

Robert S. "Bob" Krause was the vice president for institutional advancement at Kansas State University, USA, from 1986 to 2009 as well as acting athletic director from 2008 to 2009. He announced his resignation on March 31, 2009.

John Angus Lauchlin Currie is a college athletics administrator, currently serving as the director of athletics at Wake Forest University. Prior to his post at Wake Forest, Currie held the position of Vice Chancellor and director of athletics at the University of Tennessee from February 28, 2017, until December 1, 2017.

Susan Georgia Nugent was the 20th president of Illinois Wesleyan University. She was president of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio from 2003 to 2013, and interim president of the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio for the 2015-16 academic year. She was succeeded at Kenyon by Sean M. Decatur, former dean of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College, and at Wooster by Sarah Bolton, former dean of Williams College. In November of 2019, Nugent became the first woman to serve as President of Illinois Wesleyan University. On April 10th it was announced that Sheahon Zenger would succeed her role as president in the 24-25 school year.

The SIU Edwardsville Cougars are the intercollegiate athletic teams of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), located in Edwardsville, Illinois, United States. Duffy Bass Field is a baseball venue in Normal, Illinois, USA. It is home to the Illinois State Redbirds baseball team of the Division I Missouri Valley Conference. It was built in 1988 and has a capacity of 1,200 spectators, 1,000 of which is seated. The field is also home to the University High School Pioneers baseball team.

Terry Mohajir is the current vice president and director of athletics at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He was formerly the athletic director at Arkansas State University. He is a former coach at the University of Kansas Jayhawks.

Kent L. Weiser is an American university sports administrator and former college golf coach. Weiser served the athletic director for Emporia State University, a NCAA Division II sports program in Emporia, Kansas, 1999 to 2022. Douglas Allan Girod is an American educator, medical doctor, and the 18th University of Kansas chancellor. Prior to becoming chancellor, he was the University of Kansas Medical Center's executive vice chancellor, a position he had held since February 2013. Before being promoted to the executive vice chancellor at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Girod was the senior dean for the School of Medicine while dually serving as a surgeon at the University of Kansas Health System where he began his career in 1994. He is also a veteran of the United States Navy Reserve.

David Spafford is an American university sports administrator and eighth athletic director for Emporia State University, a NCAA Division II sports program in Emporia, Kansas. Previously, Spafford was the athletics director at Regis University, and before that, served as the assistant or associate athletics director for several college institutions.

Travis Goff is an American athletics director at the University of Kansas. Prior to being named as Kansas' athletic director, Goff spent the previous twenty years as a development administrator in college athletics, which he began at his alma mater, Kansas, with his career including stops at Tulane University and Northwestern University.
