Sherborne Qatar consists of four English-speaking schools operated in Qatar by the UK-based Sherborne International. The four schools are Sherborne Qatar Senior School for pupils aged 11 to 18, Sherborne Qatar Prep Schoo and Sherborne Qatar Junior School both for pupils aged 3 to 11 and Sherborne Qatar School for Girls for pupils aged 3 to18

Sherborne Qatar has been incorporated in the Ministry of Education's educational reform program, the 'Outstanding Schools Program'. [1] The school has been described as a "a good school with significant outstanding features, providing a high quality of education for all of its pupils and fully meets the standards" in British School Overseas inspection report. [2]

History

Sherborne was established in Qatar in 2009 at the invitation of the Supreme Education Council. [3] A member of the ruling family, Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani, had recommended the school to the council. [4] [5] It was the first Sherborne branch established outside the United Kingdom. [6] Colin Niven was the founding principal. [4]

In 2021, Sherborne Senior relocated from its site in Bani Hajer, to a new site by the mall of qatar in Al Rayyan, Doha. Starting from September 2024, the sherborne senior school will begin to accept students aged 4-18, within the same site, while the Sherborne Prep will become a new, boys-only school.

Sherborne School is a 13–18 boys public school and boarding school located beside Sherborne Abbey, in the parish of Sherborne, Dorset. The school has been in continuous operation on the same site for over 1,300 years. It was founded in 705 AD by St Aldhelm and, following the dissolution of the monasteries, re-founded in 1550 by King Edward VI, making it one of the oldest schools in the United Kingdom. Sherborne is one of the twelve founding member public schools of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference in 1869 and is a member of the Eton Group and Boarding Schools Association.

The education system in Qatar is jointly directed and controlled by the Supreme Education Council (SEC) and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MOEHE) at all levels. The SEC is responsible for overseeing independent schools, whereas the MOE is responsible for providing support to private schools. Formal schooling officially began in 1956. Primary schooling is obligatory for every child and is free in public schools.
