Sherita Hill Golden is an American physician who is the Hugh P. McCormick Family Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Johns Hopkins University. Her research considers biological and systems influences on diabetes and its outcomes. From 2019-2024, she served as the vice president and chief diversity officer. She was elected Fellow of National Academy of Medicine in 2021.

Early life and education

Golden is from Maryland. [1] She was an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, College Park, which she graduated summa cum laude . [2] She moved to the University of Virginia School of Medicine for her medical degree, and graduated a member Alpha Omega Alpha. [3] She was the first African-American to be awarded the C. Richard Bowman Scholarship for clinical excellence. [4] Whilst she had originally intended to become a paediatrician, she was inspired by a diabetes expert at Virginia to change her speciality. At the time, diabetes was a growing public health epidemic, and Golden became concerned by the physical and mental impacts. She trained in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University, where she simultaneously completed a Master of Health Science. She was elected to the Delta Omega society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. [5]

Research and career

Golden's research considers glucose management in diabetes patients. [6] She was appointed Director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Inpatient Glucose Management Program in 2003. [5] In particular, Golden investigates the structural inequalities that impact the treatment of minority ethnic populations. [1] In the United States, minority ethnic populations often live in less well-resourced communities than their white counterparts. [1] She has called for more farmers markets, opportunities to order healthy foods at libraries and more traditional grocery stores in deprived communities. [1] Golden has also called for healthcare providers to mandate anti-racism and unconscious bias training. These courses can help to avoid misdiagnosis and treatment of conditions in Black patients, and has been successfully delivered at Johns Hopkins. [1] She was the first to demonstrate the connection between depression and diabetes, i.e. suffering from depression made a person more likely to suffer from diabetes, and having diabetes predicted risk of developing depression. [4]

As vice chair for the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, Golden established evidence-based practises for diabetes care and the Journeys in Medicine speaker series, which became a major civic engagement initiative. [7] She worked with her local community to handle the unrest that followed the 2015 death of Freddie Gray. She was elected to the board of the American Diabetes Association in 2018. [8] She was the inaugural Executive Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine from 2015 to 2019. [9] [10]

Johns Hopkins Medicine tapped Golden to serve as the vice president and chief diversity officer in 2019. [11] She had many celebrated achievements in this role, including leadership around health equity and access during the COVID-19 pandemic. [12] [13] [14] On January 11, 2024, Golden released a 'Diversity Digest' newsletter, which included a statement that "White people, able bodied people, heterosexuals, cisgendered people, males, Christians, middle or owning class people, middle aged people, and English-speakers" in the United States are “privileged”. [15] Following widespread backlash precipitated by an employee sharing the message publicly, Golden apologized the next morning for sending an overly simplistic message, and she publicly retracted and disavowed her summary of social privilege. A Johns Hopkins Medicine spokesperson stated: "The January edition of the monthly newsletter from the Johns Hopkins Medicine Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity used language that contradicts the values of Johns Hopkins as an institution." [16] Johns Hopkins Medicine employees and students supported Golden and expressed disappointment with her co-leadership’s response. [17] Golden resigned her position as vice president and chief diversity officer on March 5, 2024. [18]

Golden is married to Christopher Golden, Director of the Newborn Nursery and Professor of Paediatrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Together they have one son. [1]

William Henry Welch was an American physician, pathologist, bacteriologist, and medical-school administrator. He was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was the first dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was also the founder of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the first school of public health in the country. Welch was more known for his cogent summations of current scientific work, than his own scientific research. The Johns Hopkins medical school library is also named after Welch. In his lifetime, he was called the "Dean of American Medicine" and received various awards and honors throughout his lifetime and posthumously.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center</span> Hospital in Maryland, United States

Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center is the teaching hospital trauma center, neonatal intensive care unit, geriatrics center, and is home to the Johns Hopkins Burn Center, the only adult burn trauma in Maryland, containing about 420 beds. Located in southeast Baltimore City, Maryland, along Eastern Avenue near Bayview Boulevard, it is part of the Johns Hopkins Health System and named after its close proximity to the Chesapeake Bay. Founded in 1773 as an almshouse, it was relocated several times until its now present location in 1866. In 1925, it transitioned into several municipal hospitals, which transferred ownership to Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1984.

Diane Edmund Griffin is the university distinguished professor and a professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she was the department chair from 1994-2015. She is also the current vice-president of the National Academy of Sciences. She holds joint appointments in the departments of Neurology and Medicine. In 2004, Griffin was elected to the United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in the discipline of microbial biology.

Catherine D. DeAngelis is the first woman and the first pediatrician to become editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). She has also edited several additional medical journals. Before assuming the editor's position at JAMA in 2000, DeAngelis was a professor and Vice Dean of Faculty at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

M. Christine "Chris" Zink is the director of the Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She also holds professorships in the Department of Pathology at Johns Hopkins and in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Zink researches the response of the immune system to retroviruses such as HIV and is currently investigating an animal model of antiretroviral therapy and the potential of a common antibiotic to prevent HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

Lisa A. Cooper is an American internal medicine and public health physician who is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Equity in Health and Healthcare at Johns Hopkins University, jointly appointed in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and in the departments of Health, Behavior and Society, Health Policy and Management; Epidemiology; and International Health in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is the James F. Fries Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity, and Director of the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute. Cooper is also a Gilman Scholar and a core faculty member in the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research. She is internationally recognized for her research on the impact of race, ethnicity and gender on the patient-physician relationship and subsequent health disparities. She is a member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). In 2007, she received a MacArthur Fellowship.

Namandjé N. Bumpus is an American pharmacologist who serves as the Principal Deputy Commissioner and Acting Chief Scientist of the Food and Drug Administration. She was previously director of the department of pharmacology and molecular sciences at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she holds the E.K. Marshall and Thomas H. Maren professorship in pharmacology. Bumpus is known for her research on the metabolism of antiviral drugs used to treat HIV-1 and how genetic variations in drug-processing enzymes may impact these drugs' efficacy. Bumpus received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2016. The Food and Drug Administration’s top scientist Namandjé Bumpus has assumed the role of principal deputy commissioner when longtime agency leader Janet Woodcock retired from that role in January 2024.

Erin Kathleen Donnelly Michos is an American cardiologist. She is an associate professor of Medicine and Director of Women's Cardiovascular Health at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Michos is also an Associate Faculty of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research at Johns Hopkins, and has a joint faculty appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Crystal C. Watkins Johansson is an American neuroscientist and psychiatrist and associate professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine as well as the director of the Sheppard Pratt Memory Clinic in Neuropsychiatry in Baltimore, Maryland. Johansson was the first Black female Meyerhoff Scholar to obtain an MD/PhD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. During her MD/PhD she developed a novel treatment for gastrointestinal in patients with diabetes that led to a patent for a pharmacological compound in 2000. Johansson is a practicing neuropsychiatrist with a focus on geriatric psychiatry and she conducts brain imaging research as well as research on cancer in African American women.

Sapna Ravi Kudchadkar is an American critical care physician and anesthesiologist. She is an Associate professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine, pediatrics and physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 2022, she was appointed Vice Chair of Pediatric Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins as well as Anesthesiologist-in-Chief of the Johns Hopkins Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children's Center.

Brown is notable for cloning one of the first recombinant HIV viruses and developing a novel method to visualize HIV infected cells using GFP fluorescence.

Johns Hopkins Children's Center (JHCC) is a nationally ranked, pediatric acute care children's teaching hospital located in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, adjacent to Johns Hopkins Hospital. The hospital has 196 pediatric beds and is affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The hospital is the flagship pediatric member of Johns Hopkins Medicine and is one of two children's hospitals in the network. The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to infants, children, teens, and young adults aged 0–21 throughout Baltimore and the wider United States. Johns Hopkins Children's Center also sometimes treats adults who require pediatric care. Johns Hopkins Children's Center also features the only ACS verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in the state. The hospital is directly attached to Johns Hopkins Hospital and is situated near the Ronald McDonald House of Maryland.

Redonda Gail Miller is an American public health leader. After serving as chief resident, vice chair for clinical operations for the Department of Medicine and vice president for medical affairs, she became the first female president of Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2016.

Suzanne Louise Topalian is an American surgical oncologist. She is the Bloomberg-Kimmel Professor of Cancer Immunotherapy in the Bloomberg-Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In this role, she studies human anti-tumor immunity.

Eve Askanas Kerr is an American physician-researcher. Kerr is a Full Professor of internal medicine and the inaugural Vice-Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Well-being at the University of Michigan.

Leigh Ebony Boulware is an American general internist, physician-scientist, and clinical epidemiologist. She is the Dean of Wake Forest School of Medicine and chief science officer and vice chief academic officer of Advocate Health. Boulware formerly served as the Nanaline Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine and director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the Duke University School of Medicine.

Deidra C. Crews MD, ScM is an American nephrologist and epidemiologist. She is the Deputy Director of Johns Hopkins Center for Health Equity and a Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Crews research focuses on social drivers of disparities in kidney disease and hypertension.

Monica Elizabeth Peek is an American physician. She is the Ellen H. Block Professor for Health Justice and Associate Vice Chair for Research Faculty Development at the University of Chicago's Pritzker School of Medicine. Prior to joining the University of Chicago, Peek led outreach programs through the Rockwell Gardens to educate African-Americans about health.
