Shiann Darkangelo (born November 28, 1993) is an American professional ice hockey player for PWHL Ottawa of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She has played at the international level with Team USA and won gold at the 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship with the team. At the NCAA Division I level, she accumulated 42 points with the Syracuse Orange women's ice hockey program during the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons and registered 60 points with the Quinnipiac Bobcats women's ice hockey program during the 2013–14 and 2014–15 seasons. [1] She was team captain of the Toronto Six roster that won the 2023 Isobel Cup championship.
Darkangelo played the 2015 season with the Connecticut Whale in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) and was selected to participate in the 1st NWHL All-Star Game. [2] On July 31, Darkangelo signed a one-year contract for $21,000 with the Buffalo Beauts. [3] She was selected to participate in the 2nd NWHL All-Star Game in 2017.
In April 2020, after one year spent playing with the GTA West chapter of the PWHPA, she was announced as one of the first five players signed the Toronto Six, the first NWHL team in Canada. The initial group comprised two defensemen, one goaltender, and two forwards, Darkangelo and Taylor Woods. [4]
Darkangelo spent the 2017–18 CWHL season playing for the Canadian Women's Hockey League expansion team Kunlun Red Star based in Shenzhen, China. Darkangelo's first point with the Red Star took place on October 28, 2017, on a power play goal at the 1:43 mark of a second period match against the Calgary Inferno. [5]
Darkangelo's goal was assisted by Hongxin Yan and Zhixin Liu, who all gained their first career CWHL points on the play.
On August 2, 2018, Darkangelo signed a contract with the Toronto Furies. [6]
One year following the dissolution of the CWHL, the NWHL announced an expansion team for Toronto. Dubbed the Six, the leadership for their inaugural season (2020-21) included Darkangelo, appointed as the first team captain in franchise history, while Emma Woods and Emma Greco served as alternate captains. [7] Collobrating with Emma Woods, they would assist on the first goal scored in Toronto Six franchise history. [8] Scored by Lindsay Eastwood, the goal took place in the second game of the 2020–21 NWHL season, scored against Minnesota Whitecaps goaltender Amanda Leveille . [9]
Darkangelo signed with PWHL Boston prior to the beginning of the PWHL's inaugural season in 2024. [10] Part of the way through her first season in the PWHL, Darkangelo was traded to PWHL Ottawa in exchange for Lexie Adzija and Caitrin Lonergan. [11]
In 2011, Darkangelo won the gold medal with USA Hockey at the U18 IIHF Women's World Championships. In 2016, she would win gold with the US at the senior IIHF Women's World Championships, picking up 4 points in 5 games. [12]
Darkangelo was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and raised in Brighton, Michigan. She has five siblings, three brothers, Anthony, Austin, and Isaac; and two sisters, Mariah and Ciara. [13] Her younger brother Isaac led the Northern Michigan Wildcats in tackles in the 2019–20 season before transferring to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to play with the Illinois Fighting Illini football program of the NCAA Division I in April 2020. Darkangelo follows a plant-based diet. [15] [16] She is a certified plant-based nutritionist and owner of Plant-Based Performance, a whole foods, plant-based lifestyle coaching company. [14]

The Minnesota Whitecaps were a professional ice hockey team in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). They played in Richfield, Minnesota, part of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, at the Richfield Ice Arena. Established in 2004, the Whitecaps were originally part of the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL) from 2004 to 2011.
The history of women's ice hockey in the United States can be traced back to the early 20th century. In the 1920s, the Seattle Vamps competed in various hockey tournaments. In 1916, the United States hosted an international hockey tournament in Cleveland, Ohio, that featured Canadian and American women's hockey teams.

The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) was a women's professional ice hockey league in the United States and Canada that operated from March 2015 until June 2023. The league was established in 2015 as the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), comprising four league-owned teams. Over time, some teams gained independent ownership and the number of teams grew to seven; teams during the league's final season in 2022–23 included the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, Montreal Force, and Toronto Six. The Isobel Cup was awarded annually to the league playoff champion.
The Boston Pride were a professional women's ice hockey team based in Boston, Massachusetts. They were one of the four charter franchises of the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF). The Pride played at Warrior Ice Arena, which is also the practice facility for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League. The Pride won the inaugural Isobel Cup in 2016 and became the first professional women's ice hockey team to win three championship titles when they claimed consecutive victories in 2021 and 2022.
The Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy Cup, often shortened to Isobel Cup, is the championship trophy that was awarded annually to the now defunct Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) playoff winner. The trophy is named after Lady Isobel Gathorne-Hardy, the daughter of Lord Stanley—former Governor-General of Canada and namesake of the Stanley Cup—and one of the first women known to play the game of ice hockey.

The Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the promotion of professional women's ice hockey. It was founded in May 2019 following the dissolution of the Canadian Women's Hockey League. PWHPA members expressed dissatisfaction with the operations of the existing professional National Women's Hockey League and vowed to boycott existing women's leagues and to work towards the establishment of a unified, financially sustainable professional league. From 2019 to 2023, the PWHPA organized a series of exhibition seasons, known as the Dream Gap tours, to generate support towards its goal.

The team was founded in 2020 with their inaugural regular season held in Lake Placid, New York, followed by the Isobel Cup playoffs in Brighton, Massachusetts.
Taylor Cassidy Woods is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and strongwoman, currently playing in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) with the Toronto Six. A defenceman who has also played as a two-way forward, she is both a Clarkson Cup champion and an Isobel Cup champion.
Lindsay Eastwood is a retired Canadian ice hockey defender, having played for the Toronto Six in the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) from 2020 to 2023. The Syracuse Orange all-time leader in goals scored among defenders, she scored the first goal in Six history. She was a member of the Six roster that won the 2023 Isobel Cup championship, representing the last championship team of the PHF.
The collapse of the Canadian Women's Hockey League occurred in the spring of 2019. Previously one of the top women's ice hockey leagues in the world, the Canadian Women's Hockey League announced on 31 March 2019, that it would be folding effective 1 May.
