Shirkat Gah women's resource centre, is a women's rights organization in Pakistan which focuses on research, publications and advocacy on women's issues. [1]

History

Shirkat Gah was established in 1975 by Najma Sadeque (journalist, human rights activist, environmental writer) with a group of 7 like-minded women. [2] Shirkat Gah was established as a resource and publication center for women to promote their economic and social development and to carry out research and awareness related activities. [3]

In the beginning, Shirkat Gah helped working women by starting women's hostel and day-care centers. Women members of Shirkat Gah played key role in the formation of Women's Action Forum in 1981 [4] along with members of other women's organizations such as Simorgh, Aurat Foundation, Applied Socio-Economic Resource Center (ASR) and Society for Advancement of Education (SAHE). [5]

Works

Shirkat Gah has conducted research and organized policy dialogues on various issues related to women [6] [7] such as abortion, [8] [9] child marriage, [10] impact of COVID-19 on women [11] [12] domestic violence. [13]

She heads the Shirkat Gah women's resource centre in Pakistan, and is known for her extensive work on gender and class analysis, both in Pakistan and more globally.

Najma Sadeque from Pakistan was a leading woman journalist, author, human rights activist, particularly of women's rights, an artist, an environmentalist, and a painter. She also did research on socioeconomic issues and authored many books and wrote articles. She co-founded Shirkat Gah in 1975, a women's NGO to highlight human rights violations against women. She also co-founded the Women’s Action Forum (WAF), Pakistan.

Feminism in Pakistan refers to the set of movements which aim to define, establish, and defend the rights of women in Pakistan.This may involve the pursuit of equal political, economic, and social rights, alongside equal opportunity. These movements have historically been shaped in response to national and global reconfiguration of power, including colonialism, nationalism, Islamization, dictatorship, democracy, and the War on Terror. The relationship between the women's movement and the Pakistani state has undergone significant shifts from mutual accommodation to confrontation and conflict.

Khawar Mumtaz is a Pakistani women's rights activist, feminist author and university professor. She is the Former Chairperson of the National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) who served for three consecutive terms from 2013 to 2019.

Hilda Saeed is a Pakistani activist and freelance journalist. She is chair of Shirkat Gah and a founding member of the Women's Action Forum (WAF) in Pakistan and of the Pakistan Reproductive Health Network.

Fauzia Viqar is a Pakistani human rights activist with a focus on women's rights. She served as the first chairperson of the Punjab Commission on the Status of Women from 2014 to 2019.

Women Democratic Front (WDF) is an independent socialist-feminist organization based in Pakistan. It was founded in the federal capital Islamabad on March 8, 2018, by hundreds of delegates from Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The Aurat Azadi March was started in 2018 in Pakistan by members of Women Democratic Front, other organizations like Women's Action Forum, Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls alliance, Young Teachers Association, Home-Based Women Workers Union, Awami Workers Party, Awami Jamhoori Party also joined the march on International Women's Day in Islamabad. Aurat Azadi March and Aurat March are organized by different groups of women since 2018. Aurat Azadi March is organized by group of socialist feminists whereas Aurat March is organized by group of liberal feminists. Aurat March was also started the same year by the group of individual women known as "Hum Aurtein" collective in Karachi and Lahore.

Zaitoon Bano, also spelled Zaitun Banu, was a Pakistani poet, short story writer, novelist, broadcaster, and advocate of women's rights in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. She primarily wrote in Pashto and Urdu languages. Sometimes, she was referred to as Khatun-e-Awal or "first lady of Pashto fiction", an honorary title awarded to her in recognition of her contribution to women's rights of Pashtuns. She wrote over twenty-four books, including her first short story titled Hindara (Mirror) which appears one of the prominent writings of Pashto language.

Alya Bakhshal is a Pakistani feminist, political worker and organizer. She is general secretary of the Women Democratic Front and women secretary of Awami Workers Party, Sindh.

Zohra Yusuf is an advertising professional, an activist and a journalist who is lauded for her work in women's rights, human rights and media. She is the former Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP).

Aisha Gazdar is a Pakistani journalist, writer, filmmaker and a researcher for documentaries. She is known for her award-winning film: The Honor Deception. She is the daughter of Mushtaq Gazdar.

On 23 June 2021, a car bomb exploded in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, killing three people.

On 12 February 1983, a women's march was held in Lahore, Pakistan. The march was led by the Women's Action Forum (WAF) and the Punjab Women Lawyers Association. It assembled at Mall Road in Lahore to proceed toward the Lahore High Court in Pakistan to protest against the discriminatory Law of Evidence and other Hudood Ordinances. The marchers were tear gassed and baton charged by police injuring many women. 50 of the marchers were arrested for defying the prohibition of public assembly that was in force. Pakistan's National Women's Day has been held officially on this day, in commemoration, since declared in 2012.

Lieutenant General Chaudhary Sarfraz Ali was a three star Pakistani general who was serving as Corps Commander Quetta since December 2020 and Commander of the Azad Kashmir Regiment since December 2021 until his death in a helicopter crash on 1 August 2022.
