The ROC would not return to the Olympics until 1984 and under the name "Chinese Taipei" due to objections by the People's Republic of China over the political status of Taiwan.

Thum Ping Tjin, also known as PJ Thum, is a former national swimmer, a former research associate at the University of Oxford and read history at his alma mater. He was the coordinator of Project Southeast Asia, a collective of scholars of Southeast Asia at the University of Oxford. The first Singaporean to swim the English Channel, he represented his country in four swim races at the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Singapore participated at the 2005 Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines under the IOC country code SIN. Sending a delegation of 658 athletes and 291 officials, the third largest it had ever sent to the games, the Singapore team set its target at 35 gold medals, five more than the haul won at the 2003 Southeast Asian Games held in Vietnam.

The contingent was led by Chef-de-Mission Annabel Pennefather, and assisted by Deputy Chef-de-Mission Abdul Rahman bin Hassan. The flag-bearer was sailor Tay Junhao Roy.

Sng Ju Wei is a Singaporean former swimmer, who specialized in sprint and middle-distance freestyle events. He is a two-time Olympian, and a triple medalist at the 2001 Southeast Asian Games. Sng also trained for the Aquatic Performance Swim Club in Singapore district, under head coach Jin Xia Li.
