Deaflympics major international sport event for deaf people

The Deaflympics are an International Olympic Committee (IOC)-sanctioned event at which deaf athletes compete at an elite level. Unlike the athletes in other IOC-sanctioned events, the Deaflympians cannot be guided by sounds. The games have been organized by the Comité International des Sports des Sourds since the first event in 1924.

Terence Mike Parkin is a swimmer from South Africa, who won the silver medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the 200 metres breaststroke. Parkin, who is deaf, also competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics, as well as the 2005 Deaflympics in which he took home two gold medals.

2009 Summer Deaflympics

The 2009 Summer Deaflympics, officially known as the 21st Summer Deaflympics, is an international multi-sport event that was celebrated from September 5 to September 15, 2009 in Taipei, Taiwan. It is the third Summer Deaflympics to be held in Asia/Pacific region. Judo, Karate, and Taekwondo have been recognized as new summer disciplines in the Deaflympics sports competition program.

2001 Summer Deaflympics

The 2001 Summer Deaflympics, officially known as the 19th Summer Deaflympics, is an international multi-sport event that was celebrated from July 16 to August 1, 2001 in Rome, Italy.

United States at the Deaflympics

The United States has been participating at the Deaflympics from 1935 and it is also currently placed first in the all time Deaflympics medal list. US has won more than 1000 medals,the only nation to do so in Deaflympics.

Spain at the Deaflympics

Spain competed at the inaugural edition of the Deaflympics in 1957. But they did not participate in a Deaflympics competition until 1973. Since then Spain has been regularly participating at the Deaflympics. Spain won its first Deaflympics medal way back in 1981.

Argentina at the Deaflympics

Argentina completed at the Deaflympics for the first time in 1965. Since then Argentina has been regularly participating at the Deaflympics.Argentina won its first Deaflympics medal in 1965. Argentina has never competed at the Winter Deaflympics.

Brazil at the Deaflympics

Brazil competed at the Deaflympics for the first time in 1993. Since then Brazil has been regularly participating at the Deaflympics. Brazil won its first Deaflympics medal in 2009. Brazil has never competed at the Winter Deaflympics.

Armenia at the Deaflympics

Armenia has been competing at the Deaflympics since its debut at the Deaflympics in 2001. Armenia won their first Deaflympic medal in 2013, for the wrestling event; this is also the only medal received by Armenia at the Deaflympics to date.

Saudi Arabia first competed at the Deaflympics for the first time in 2001. Saudi Arabia won its first Deaflympic medal (bronze) in the 2009 Summer Deaflympics for bowling, which is also the only medal won by them in Deaflympic history.

Mexico at the Deaflympics

Mexico has been participating at the Deaflympics since making its debut way back in 1965. Mexico won its first Deaflympic medal in the 2001 Summer Deaflympics for Athletics. In the 2017 Summer Deaflympics, Mexico won its first ever gold medal in Deaflympics history for Judo.

Malaysia at the Deaflympics

Malaysia first competed at the Deaflympics for the first time in 1993. Since then, Malaysia has competed at the Summer Deaflympics on four occasions. Malaysia won its first Deaflympic medal also during its maiden appearance at the 1993 Summer Deaflympics. Malaysia also narrowly missed the opportunity to compete at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics after being not readied to take part at the event.

Uruguay at the Deaflympics

Uruguay competed at the Deaflympics for the first time in 2001. They sent a delegation consisting of only one athlete in the event. Uruguay yet to receive a medal at the Deaflympics.

Soviet Union at the Deaflympics

Soviet Union competed at the Deaflympics for the first time in 1957. Soviet Union competed at each editions of the Summer Deaflympics from 1957 to 1989 except for the 1985 Summer Deaflympics until the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Soviet Union has won medals in every editions of the Summer Deaflympics it has competed and it is considered as one of the greatest nations to have participated at the Deaflympics after earning a medal haul of 524 at the Summer Deaflympics.

Turkmenistan at the Deaflympics Turkmenistan at the Deaflympics

Turkmenistan first competed at the Summer Deaflympics in 2001. The country also competed at the Summer Deaflympics in 2005, 2013 and 2017.

Singapore at the 2017 Summer Deaflympics

Singapore competed in the 2017 Summer Deaflympics which was held in Samsun, Turkey after narrowly missing the opportunity to compete at the 2013 Summer Deaflympics. Singapore sent a delegation consisting of 5 participants for the event. This was only the fourth time that Singapore was eligible participate at the Summer Deaflympics after making its Deaflympic debut in 2001.
