John David Ashcroft is an American lawyer,lobbyist,and former politician who served as the United States Attorney General in the George W. Bush administration from 2001 to 2005. He previously held various positions in Missouri politics;as Auditor of Missouri (1973–1975),Attorney General of Missouri (1976–1985),Governor of Missouri (1985–1993),and as a United States Senator representing Missouri (1995–2001). He later founded The Ashcroft Group,a Washington D.C. lobbying firm.

Joseph Patrick Teasdale was an American politician. A Democrat,he served as the 48th Governor of Missouri from 1977 to 1981. Teasdale was formerly a prosecutor for Jackson County,Missouri. In 1972,he made his first bid for governor,placing third in the Democratic primary,but attaining name recognition and the nickname "Walking Joe". In 1976,after initially running for U.S. Senate,Teasdale switched races and made a second bid for the Governor's office. He won the nomination and defeated incumbent Kit Bond in an upset. In 1980,Teasdale beat back a primary challenge from State Treasurer Jim Spainhower,but was defeated by Bond in a rematch. After leaving office,Teasdale returned to practicing law until his death.

Kansas City,Missouri was founded in 1838 and surpassed the competing Westport to become the predominant city west of St. Louis. The area had a major role in the westward expansion of the United States. The Santa Fe and Oregon trails ran through the area. In 1854,when Kansas was opened to Euro-American settlement,the Missouri-Kansas border became the first battlefield in the conflict in the American Civil War.
