Snap Judgment is a weekly storytelling radio program and podcast, produced in Oakland, California [1] and distributed by Public Radio Exchange, [2] and hosted by Glynn Washington.

Contents

Guests have included comedian Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, [3] Antwan Williams, [4] Alison Becker, Ise Lyfe and Earlonne Woods. [4] Each episode is made up of narrative pieces on a common theme. The program first aired in July 2010. [5] [6] As of November 2017, the podcast was downloaded approximately 2 million times per month, and the program is broadcast across more than 400 radio stations nationwide. [7]

History

In 2008, Glynn Washington won the Public Radio Talent Quest, a talent contest staged by Public Radio Exchange and Corporation for Public Broadcasting. [1] This provided the funding necessary to start the show.

From 2015 through 2020 Snap Judgment was distributed by WNYC . [8] From 2020 to 2021, the program was broadcast in Canada on CBC Radio One.

In August 2023, Snap Judgement Studios was bought by KQED. [9]

On October 26, 2023, the production employees of Snap Judgment voted overwhelmingly to be represented by NABET-CWA Local 51.

Ear Hustle is a non-fiction podcast about prison life and life after incarceration created by Earlonne Woods and Antwan Williams, both formerly incarcerated, and Nigel Poor, an artist who volunteers at San Quentin State Prison. In 2016, it was selected by the Radiotopia network as the winner of its Podquest competition, and the following year released its first season. It was the first podcast to be entirely created and produced inside a prison.

Earlonne Woods is an American podcaster and author, best known for co-hosting and co-founding the podcast Ear Hustle in 2017, and co-authoring the book This Is Ear Hustle in 2021. Woods helped create Ear Hustle while incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison. In November 2018, Woods' sentence was commuted by California governor Jerry Brown. He was hired to continue co-hosting and producing the podcast after his release. In 2020, alongside his Ear Hustle co-hosts, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Audio Reporting.

Nancy was a weekly podcast produced by WNYC Studios. It was hosted by Kathy Tu and Tobin Low. The first episode debuted on April 9, 2017. The show's last episode was aired on June 29, 2020. The series features a range of topics exploring the LGBTQ experience.

Kathy Tu is an Asian-American podcaster and current head of production at Wondery. Tu previously co-hosted Nancy until 2020 and worked for New York Times Opinion podcasts.

Dhaya Lakshminarayanan is an American comedian, performance artist, TV host, and storyteller. She has performed at venues such as San Francisco's Asian Art Museum, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Siren Theater, San Francisco's Punchline Comedy Club and Cobb's Comedy Club, the Brava Theatre, Throckmorton Theatre, and others. She has also performed at comedy festivals such as SF Sketchfest 2015 and SF Sketchfest 2020; the Desi Comedy Fest, America's only South Asian comedy festival; and the Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. In 2019, Lakshminarayanan, Will Durst, and W. Kamau Bell appeared as guests on KQED in regard to the controversial proposed closure of the historic San Francisco Punchline Comedy Club. The same year, she regularly opened for Greg Proops at the Punchline.

This is Ear Hustle: Unflinching Stories of Everyday Prison Life is a non-fiction book about the podcast Ear Hustle, written by Ear Hustle co-hosts Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods and published in 2021 by Crown Publishing Group. The book both expands on topics covered in the podcast, and also explores new topics that the podcast deliberately avoids, such as the background of the authors. The book received positive reviews.
